Florida International Panthers vs Liberty Flames prediction: Kam Davis and Liberty's ground game test FIU's stingy defense

FIU defends well enough to make Liberty earn it, but a Panthers offense that can't run or finish drives probably can't keep pace with the Flames' rushing attack.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Liberty leans on its run game and its red-zone defense, while FIU's offense moves the ball in spurts and settles for too little.
  • Kam Davis and Liberty's line against an FIU run defense that sits near the middle of FBS.
  • Our number makes Liberty a 15.1-point favorite, slightly more than the market's 14, with the total right on 45.

The ground game decides it

Liberty is 6-1, unbeaten in Conference USA and already bowl eligible, and it got there by running the ball. The Flames average 221.9 rushing yards per game, 11th of 138 FBS teams, and their line produces 3.43 line yards per carry (a measure of how much push the blockers create), 15th nationally. Our projection has them running for 214 yards on Saturday.

Kam Davis is the sharp end of it. He averages 7.0 yards per carry on the season and has scored four touchdowns in his last three games. Liberty isn't a big-play team: its explosiveness ranks 112th. It wins by staying on schedule, with a success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense ahead of the chains) of 47.4%, 30th in the country.

FIU's defense is good, but its strength is in the wrong place for this matchup. The Panthers allow 171.0 passing yards per game, 16th, while their rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play) ranks 49th and their line yards allowed rank 51st. That is the soft spot Liberty will lean on.

FIU can't answer on the ground

The other side of the trenches is the larger mismatch. FIU ranks 125th in rushing EPA per play and 112th in line yards per carry. Liberty's front stuffs runs at or behind the line on 24.5% of carries, 10th nationally.

The backfield is also in flux. Devonte Lyons will make his second straight start, and he has been the bright spot, with 266 yards at 5.5 per carry over his last three games, including 115 against Middle Tennessee. Anthony Carrie's status is unconfirmed: one report had him aiming to return this week, while FIU's student paper says he is likely out again. Carrie has averaged 3.1 yards per carry this season, so the drop-off matters less than it might seem.

Kohl and the finishing problem

J.J. Kohl runs a pass-first, up-tempo offense, and his line protects him well: FIU allows 1.0 sack per game, 13th nationally. He has thrown for 572 yards and five touchdowns over the last three games. The worry is turnovers. He has eight interceptions on the season, and Liberty's pass defense ranks 11th in passing EPA allowed. Linebacker Derrell Farrar picked off Kennesaw State's quarterback last week to set up a field goal.

The bigger issue is what happens after FIU crosses midfield. The Panthers score 2.86 points per scoring opportunity, 123rd, and Liberty allows just 2.24, fourth in the country. FIU's best defensive trait cuts the other way: it allows a 28.4% conversion rate on third down, fifth nationally, which can stall Liberty drives and keep the score closer than the yardage.

Hidden yards cut both ways

Liberty hurts itself with flags. The Flames give up 85.7 penalty yards per game, 137th of 138, and that is FIU's clearest path to stealing possessions. Kicker Chase Reeves has made all 11 of his field goals, so Liberty cashes in when drives stall.

FIU gives the field back with its punting. Its gross average of 38.7 yards ranks 133rd, and opponents start drives near the 31 on average, 122nd. Liberty's average start ranks seventh. Expect the Flames to work with shorter fields all afternoon.

Both records come against soft schedules. Liberty's FBS opponents average an SP+ rating of -10.5, and FIU's average -7.4. FIU arrives with 11 days of rest after a Tuesday loss, against nine for Liberty, so neither side has a fatigue edge.

The line and our number

Liberty opened as a 14-point favorite and has not moved, with the total holding at 45. Our model makes it Liberty 30.1, FIU 14.9, a fair spread of 15.1 and an 83% chance the Flames win. Our total sits right on the market.

Liberty has covered each of its last four games, while FIU failed to cover as a 10-point favorite against Middle Tennessee. FIU won last year's meeting 34-27 in overtime. A Liberty cover would most likely run through Davis and the ground game. In our testing, favorites that cover tend to go over their rushing lines.

  • Watch: Liberty's penalty count on early drives.
  • Watch: Kohl's interceptions against Liberty's secondary.
  • Watch: Whether FIU's third-down defense holds up against the Flames' run game.
