Quick take
  • Texas's defence should keep Florida in check. The margin depends on whether Manning finally punishes a pass defence that has been torched for two straight weeks.
  • Our model doesn't price this game yet.

A Slump Meets Its Cure

Texas lost the Red River Rivalry on a walk-off field goal, but the bigger worry in Austin is what came before it. The Longhorns' offense has gone flat for a month, and Steve Sarkisian's play-calling is under scrutiny. He says the problems are fixable. This week brings the friendliest possible test of that claim: a Florida defence that has been run over and thrown on since the calendar turned.

The Texas numbers are stark. The offense ranks 96th of 138 in EPA per play (expected points added, a measure of how much each snap helps the scoreboard). Over the last three games it has slipped to -0.067, meaning the average Texas play is losing ground. Its success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule, sits at 38.4% in that stretch. Arch Manning has thrown three interceptions in those three games, including two in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma.

Florida's Secondary Is the Opening

Florida allows 268.7 passing yards per game, which ranks 131st. Its passing EPA allowed ranks 100th. Third downs have been worse: opponents convert 46.7% of them, 127th nationally. And when drives reach scoring range, the Gators give up 4.24 points per opportunity, 124th.

The recent trend is uglier than the season line. Across Ole Miss, Missouri and South Carolina, Florida allowed 37.0 points per game. Its success rate allowed in that span is 49.8%, meaning half of opponents' snaps stayed on schedule. Missouri hung 45 on the Gators, and South Carolina followed with 38.

Manning showed the ceiling against Oklahoma even in defeat, throwing for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Cam Coleman caught five balls for 110 yards that day and has five touchdowns on the season. If Texas can't move the ball against this secondary, the Sarkisian questions get louder.

Where the Pass Rushes Collide

Texas's protection is the catch. The Longhorns allow 2.4 sacks per game (107th) and a havoc rate of 17.0%, which ranks 110th. Havoc is the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or pass breakup. Florida brings 2.83 sacks per game, 18th nationally, with Jayden Woods leading at 4.5.

On the other side sits the most dangerous player in the game. Colin Simmons has 9.0 sacks, five of them against Tennessee. Texas averages 3.6 sacks per game, third in the country. Texas ranks 13th in line yards allowed. A stalled Florida ground game means Philo dropping back into Simmons's range.

Philo Against a Stingy Red Zone

Aaron Philo is Florida's best argument. He completes 70.5% of his passes at 9.0 yards per attempt, and the Gators score 5 points per scoring opportunity, fifth nationally. Sumrall called his team "a work in progress" after the South Carolina loss, and Philo's dip to 7.3 yards per attempt over the last three games shows why.

Texas is built to choke that efficiency. The Longhorns allow 4.22 yards per play, ninth in the country. They give up 2.27 points per opportunity, which ranks seventh. Florida's path to covering runs through finishing drives, and that is exactly where Texas has been strongest.

Hidden Yards and the Number

Special teams tilt toward Florida. The Gators average 29.3 yards per punt return, second nationally. Texas allows 13.7 per return (113th) and nets just 37.2 yards per punt, 118th of 136. Florida can give some of that back with penalties: its 77.8 penalty yards per game rank 129th.

Texas opened at -9.5 and has drifted to -8.5, a move toward Florida. That fits Texas's betting record: the Longhorns are 1-4 against the spread, failing even in a 30-6 win over UTSA. Last year the Gators won 29-21 in Gainesville, a loss often cited as keeping Texas out of the Playoff.

  • Whether Texas's line keeps Woods off Manning on early downs
  • Simmons's snaps against Florida's tackles on third down
  • Florida's punt return unit against Texas's coverage
  • Manning's decisions late, after two fourth-quarter picks last week

Key players

  • Aaron Philo (Florida): He averages 9.0 yards per attempt with nine touchdowns against three interceptions.
  • Jadan Baugh (Florida): He has 12 rushing touchdowns but is at 3.8 yards per carry over his last three games.
  • Jayden Woods (Florida): His 4.5 sacks lead a Florida rush facing a Texas line that ranks 107th in sacks allowed.
  • Bailey Stockton (Florida): He broke out for 127 yards and a touchdown against South Carolina.
  • Arch Manning (Texas): He threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns against Oklahoma but has three interceptions in his last three games.
