Florida Atlantic Owls vs Army Black Knights prediction: Army's ground game aims at Florida Atlantic's soft run defense

Florida Atlantic throws as well as almost anyone, but Army's option can keep Caden Veltkamp on the sideline, and a stiff wind at Michie Stadium favors the team that never throws.

Quick take
  • Army runs to shorten possessions. FAU, rested off a bye, needs quick scoring drives from Veltkamp before the wind and the clock close in.
  • Our model doesn't price this game yet.

The option finds a soft spot

Army runs for 333.2 yards per game, the most in the country. It is also the most efficient ground attack in FBS: first in rushing EPA (expected points added per play, a measure of how much each snap helps the scoreboard). Florida Atlantic's run defense ranks 113th by that same measure and allows 166.0 rushing yards per game, 106th of 138.

The Owls are not beaten at the point of attack. They rank 54th in line yards allowed, which measures how far backs travel on the part of each run the offensive line controls. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, ranks 62nd. The damage comes later in the play. FAU ranks 137th in explosiveness allowed, so a run that gets through the first level tends to keep going.

Army won't break many big plays itself. Its own explosiveness ranks 135th. What it does is stay on schedule: a 52.5% success rate, fifth nationally, measures the share of plays that keep a drive moving. Cale Hellums drives it. The quarterback has 524 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns, and he ran for 223 yards against Tulane. Samari Howard is the change of pace, averaging 10.5 yards per carry on a small workload.

Veltkamp against the clock

Jeff Monken, in his 13th season at West Point, has said FAU throws constantly and uses little play clock. The numbers back him up. The Owls pass for 304.0 yards per game, 13th nationally, and run for only 116.4, which ranks 121st.

Kelby Valsin is his top target, with 40 catches for 512 yards.

Army offers little resistance in the pocket. The Black Knights average 0.8 sacks per game, 134th in FBS. Their havoc rate, the share of plays with a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup, ranks 111th. Veltkamp should have clean looks. The catch is volume: every long Army drive costs FAU a possession, and Zach Kittley's offense needs plenty of snaps to do its damage. A forecast wind of 17.5 mph could also cut into the deep shots that make the tempo work.

What the records hide

FAU's 4-1 mark looks better than its ratings. SP+ has the Owls 69th and Army 74th, nearly level. FAU's last three opponents were Florida International, UL Monroe and Texas Southern, and UL Monroe sits 138th in SP+. The Owls posted 0.45 EPA per play over that stretch, a number that says more about the schedule than about where the offense stands now.

Army has lived in close games. It beat Tulane 20-17 on a field goal as time expired and lost 29-31 at Louisiana Tech. The Black Knights are 1-3-1 against the spread, while FAU is 4-1.

Rest favors the visitors. FAU comes in with 14 days off after its Oct. 10 bye. Army has 7 days after the Tulane finish.

Hidden yards swing both ways

FAU's return game is a real weapon. The Owls average 40.4 yards per kick return, fourth nationally, and 20.5 per punt return, sixth. Army counters with a strong leg: its net punting average of 45.8 ranks 14th. On a windy day, how those exchanges go could shift field position more than any single drive.

Ball security tilts toward Army. The Black Knights give it away 0.4 times per game, sixth in FBS, but take it away only 0.2 times, 137th. FAU's defense forces 1.6 turnovers per game, which ranks 26th. One Owls takeaway would hand Veltkamp an extra possession that Army's offense is built to deny.

What to watch

  • Army's first-down runs. If Hellums and the fullbacks reach second-and-short, FAU's offense watches from the bench.
  • FAU's opening drives. The Owls need early points through the air before the wind and Army's clock management squeeze the game.
  • Return yards. FAU's kick and punt returners are the quickest route to a short field against a defense that rarely forces turnovers.
  • Army in the red zone. The Black Knights score 3.97 points per scoring opportunity, 62nd, so empty trips keep FAU in reach.

Key players

  • Caden Veltkamp (Florida Atlantic): He has completed 73.0% of his passes for 1,425 yards, with 12 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
  • Kelby Valsin (Florida Atlantic): The top target has 40 catches for 512 yards, including 305 yards over his last three games.
  • Easton Messer (Florida Atlantic): The No. 2 receiver has 30 catches for 438 yards and 3 touchdowns.
  • Ethan Ervin (Florida Atlantic): He averages 4.4 yards per carry on the season and ran for 139 yards at UL Monroe.
  • Cale Hellums (Army): The engine of the option has 524 rushing yards and 8 rushing touchdowns, including 223 yards against Tulane.
  • Samari Howard (Army): He averages 10.5 yards per carry and gained 158 yards at Louisiana Tech.
  • Elijah Walton (Army): He leads this group with 37 tackles, 11 of them at Louisiana Tech.
  • Dillon Stowers (Army): He has 2.0 of Army's sacks on a defense that rarely gets home.
