Duke Blue Devils vs NC State Wolfpack prediction: Walker Eget's clean pocket could expose NC State's pass defense

Duke protects its quarterback as well as almost anyone, and an NC State defense that can't get home or stop big plays faces it under an interim coach.

Quick take
  • Duke's defense should contain NC State's efficient offense, while Eget finds explosive throws against a secondary that has bled big plays all season.
  • Duke's protection, 2nd nationally in sacks allowed, against an NC State front that ranks 130th in tackles for loss.
  • Our number makes Duke a 5.2-point favorite with a 51.6 total, a hair above the market's 4.5 and almost exactly on the total.

A pocket nobody disturbs

The cleanest edge in Raleigh belongs to Duke's passing game. The Blue Devils allow 0.38 sacks per game, 2nd in the FBS, and their havoc allowed (the share of plays ending in a sack, tackle for loss, fumble, interception or pass breakup) ranks 11th. That gives Walker Eget time, and he uses it to push the ball: Duke ranks 14th in explosiveness, which measures how much value its successful plays produce.

NC State is built badly for that fight. The Wolfpack average 1.5 sacks per game, 103rd, and 3.62 tackles for loss, 130th of 138. With no pressure, the back end has been exposed. NC State ranks 112th in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per play) and 110th in explosiveness allowed. Eget averaged 8.2 yards per attempt over his last three games, and the Wolfpack secondary has given up 235.1 passing yards per game, 103rd.

Two caveats. Eget left the Virginia game with a hand injury and freshman Dan Mahan entered, though Eget threw 18 passes for 201 yards against Boston College the next week; no update on his hand surfaced this week. And Jeremiah Hasley, one of his targets, is reported as questionable, which isn't confirmed.

Third down decides NC State

The Wolfpack's offense is good at one thing above all: staying on the field. NC State converts 51.7% of its third downs, 9th nationally, and its success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) ranks 37th. CJ Bailey has thrown 13 touchdowns against four interceptions, with none picked in his last three games.

Duke is the worst possible opponent for that profile. The Blue Devils allow conversions on 27.5% of third downs, 4th in the country, and 2.62 points per scoring opportunity, 11th. They also smother the run, ranking 7th in rushing EPA allowed. Kevin O'Connor has 4.5 sacks in five games and Bradley Gompers has four, so Bailey, a quarterback-run spread passer, will face a rush that can finish plays.

The ground game may get help. Running back Jayden Scott, who has missed three games since getting hurt against Louisville, is listed as questionable. Davion Gause has carried the load in his absence and ran for 104 yards against California.

Life after Doeren

NC State fired Dave Doeren after a 3-4 start that ended with a 31-28 loss at Stanford as a 7.5-point favorite. Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel is the interim head coach for the rest of the regular season, and the Wolfpack responded by beating California 31-10.

That result came against a team ranked 102nd in SP+. Duke sits 47th. NC State's defense over its last three games has allowed 0.147 EPA per play, worse than its season baseline, and 26.3 points per game. Starting strong safety Tristan Teasdell, out since the Louisville game, is listed as questionable; his return would matter for a secondary this thin.

Duke has won the last three meetings, including 29-19 in Raleigh in 2024.

Hidden yards favor Duke

Duke rarely gives the ball away, at 0.62 turnovers per game, 7th nationally. It also wins field position, starting drives at its own 31.6 on average, 19th, while NC State ranks 91st. The Blue Devils' one self-inflicted wound is flags: 72.5 penalty yards per game ranks 123rd, and drive-killing penalties are the likeliest way NC State's defense gets off the field.

The one asterisk on Duke's record is the schedule. Its FBS opponents average an SP+ of -0.8, slightly softer than NC State's 0.7, and the Blue Devils lost close games to Georgia Tech and North Carolina as favorites.

Where the number sits

Duke opened as a 5.5-point favorite and the line has moved toward NC State, to 4.5 with the total at 51.5. Our model lands at Duke by 5.2 and a total of 51.6, so it sits a touch on Duke's side of the market and essentially agrees on points. It gives NC State a 37% chance to win outright.

Duke is 6-2 against the spread; NC State is 3-5.
