Delaware Blue Hens vs Kennesaw State Owls prediction: Minicucci's hot arm faces a Kennesaw State pass rush that rarely arrives
Delaware's protection has been a problem all season, but the Owls almost never get home, and that gap could swing a game priced at a point and a half.
| Spread | Delaware -1.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 57 |
- Expect points on both sides: Delaware leans on Minicucci's arm, while Kennesaw State needs Collins efficient and careful with the ball.
- Delaware's protection, which allows 2.62 sacks per game, against a Kennesaw State front that averages 1.0 per game.
- Our number makes Delaware a 0.7-point favorite with a 57.0 total, almost exactly where the market sits.
Minicucci gets his pocket back
Nick Minicucci has made Delaware look like a different team since returning from a leg injury. He went down in Week 4 against Virginia and missed the loss to Liberty. Delaware has won both games since he came back, and the second was the best of his career.
At Western Kentucky he completed his first 18 passes. He finished with 414 yards and four touchdowns, and the win ended a seven-game road losing streak. Across his last three appearances, including the Virginia game he left early, he has 9 touchdown passes against 1 interception.
The Blue Hens throw for 286.2 yards per game, 12th in the country. Their weakness is keeping him upright. Delaware allows 2.62 sacks per game (113th of 138), and its havoc allowed rate (the share of plays ending in a sack, tackle for loss, fumble, interception or breakup) ranks 108th.
Kennesaw State is badly built to exploit that. The Owls average 1.0 sack per game, 129th nationally, and their 13.1% havoc rate ranks 117th. Ugonna Nwoha is the lone real threat, with 5.0 sacks, two of them against Middle Tennessee last time out.
The catch is that the Owls don't give up big plays. Their defense ranks 19th in explosiveness allowed, so Minicucci may have to win with patience rather than deep shots.
Collins against a soft secondary
Rickie Collins runs an efficient, careful offense when it works. He completes 69.9% of his passes, and he went 16 of 19 for 206 yards and three touchdowns in the 44-28 win over Middle Tennessee that snapped a six-game skid. When it doesn't work, it looks like the Liberty game: 124 yards and two interceptions.
Delaware's pass defense is the softest unit on the field. It allows 269.0 passing yards per game (130th) and ranks 113th in explosiveness allowed. Kennesaw State's offense ranks 128th in explosiveness, though, so the Owls aren't built to take advantage with chunk plays. Expect long drives instead.
This is where Delaware's defense can steal possessions. The Blue Hens average 2.75 sacks per game (21st) and rank 23rd in takeaways. Kennesaw State protects well, allowing 1.25 sacks per game (25th), so that matchup tilts toward even. Collins' legs matter here too: he has 324 rushing yards and five scores, which gives the Owls an outlet when the pocket breaks down.
Read the hot streak carefully
Delaware's last three games look explosive: 42.0 points per game and 0.362 EPA per play (expected points added per play, where anything near that level is elite). Those opponents were Middle Tennessee, Missouri State and Western Kentucky, ranked 126th, 129th and 116th in SP+. The defense also gave up 30.7 points per game in that stretch.
Kennesaw State's recent offense was worse, at -0.011 EPA per play, but that sample includes Liberty, ranked 45th. These are two teams in the bottom tier of FBS: Delaware sits 117th in SP+, Kennesaw State 120th. Both are 5-3 against the spread. It's the first meeting between the programs, and it's Kennesaw State's homecoming, with Delaware at 4-4 and 2-2 in Conference USA, and the Owls at 2-6 and 1-3.
Kickers and flags
In a game priced this tight, the hidden yards could decide it. Kennesaw State hits just 83.3% of its extra points, 136th in the country, and Delaware isn't much better at 92.6%. The Blue Hens have made only 6 of 9 field goals.
The Owls commit 71.4 penalty yards per game (120th) and start drives at their own 26.8 on average, 118th. One small edge belongs to them: Kennesaw State averages 12.7 yards per punt return (34th), against a Delaware unit that allows 9.1 per return (80th).
Where our number lands
Delaware is a 1.5-point favorite across 24 books, unchanged from the open, with a total of 57.0. Our model agrees almost to the decimal. It makes Delaware a 0.7-point favorite, projects a 28.8-28.2 finish and gives Kennesaw State a 48.0% chance to win at home. Our fair total is also 57.0, and our first-half total is 29.1. There's no meaningful gap to chase on the full game.
