Colorado State Rams vs Utah State Aggies prediction: Utah State's stalled offense gets its shot at FBS's worst defense

The Aggies score fewer points than anyone and Colorado State allows more than anyone, so Halloween in Logan comes down to whether Utah State can finally run its way to points.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Utah State leans on the run against a Rams defense ranked last nationally against it, while Colorado State hunts big plays to keep pace.
  • Javen Jacobs and the Aggie ground game against a Colorado State front whose stuff rate ranks 132nd.
  • Our fair line has Utah State by 7.65 against the market's 6.5, and our total matches the market.

Something has to break

Utah State scores 14.9 points per game, last among 138 FBS teams. Colorado State allows 44.0, also last. One of those streaks takes a hit Saturday in the 81st meeting of a series the Rams lead 40-38-2.

The Rams' defense isn't only giving up points. It allows 8.05 yards per play, worst in FBS. Opponents stay on schedule on 52.8% of snaps, also dead last in success rate allowed (the share of plays that keep an offense ahead of the chains). It has gotten worse lately: across Oregon State, Texas State and San Diego State, Colorado State has allowed 57.0 points per game. Even San Diego State, 105th in SP+, put up 49.

Texas State is the common opponent. It routed the Rams 66-27, then needed a late 37-yard field goal to edge Utah State 20-17 last week. Depth explains part of the slide. Colorado State has started five cornerback combinations and five different nickels.

Where the Aggies should run

Utah State's offense struggles almost everywhere. It ranks 132nd in EPA per play (expected points added per play) and 133rd in success rate. But Colorado State's weakness sits exactly where Utah State wants to go.

The Rams allow 259.1 rushing yards per game, 138th. Their line yards allowed, a measure of how much push opposing blockers get on runs, ranks 137th. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, ranks 132nd. Our projection has the Aggies running for 214 yards, against a season average of 113.4.

Javen Jacobs is the back to watch. He has averaged 6.2 yards per carry over his last three games, including 139 yards at Boise State.

Grady Brosterhous holds the quarterback job after Bronco Mendenhall said he had earned it, with McCae Hillstead (forearm) not ruled out. Brosterhous completes 55.6% of his passes, but he has thrown no interceptions in his last three starts. His protection has been shaky, allowing 2.86 sacks per game. Colorado State rarely cashes in, though, generating 1.14 sacks per game, 121st. Top receiver Eli Wood, with 479 yards this season, is listed questionable after being limited last week.

The Rams still bring the fireworks

Colorado State can score with anyone. The Rams average 38.6 points per game, 12th nationally, and rank 3rd in explosiveness (how much value their successful plays produce).

Hauss Hejny has started since replacing K'saan Farrar, and the offense has moved best with him. Against San Diego State he accounted for five touchdowns, three passing and two rushing, as the Rams snapped a four-game losing streak. He also gets help up front: Colorado State allows 0.43 sacks per game, 2nd in FBS. Brock Camp is expected to make his season debut.

The backfield finishes drives. Durell Robinson has five rushing touchdowns in his last three games, and Jayden Brown averages 8.7 yards per carry. The Rams rank 3rd in points per scoring opportunity.

Utah State's defense is its better side of the ball. It allows 4.92 yards per play, 33rd, and ranks 17th in limiting explosive plays. That's the pressure point for Colorado State.

Hidden yards favor Colorado State

The Aggies give the ball away 1.71 times per game, 120th. Colorado State's defense can't stop much, but it takes the ball away 2.0 times per game, 6th nationally. Every Utah State turnover hands a top-12 scoring offense a short field.

Kickoffs tilt the same way. The Rams average 39.3 yards per kick return, 2nd in FBS, and Utah State's coverage ranks 131st. Aggie field goals have been shaky too, at 6/10 this season.

Utah State does have one counter. Opponents start drives at their own 24.6 on average, 5th nationally.

What the number says

Utah State has been a 6.5-point favorite since the open, with the total at 63.5. The Aggies are 4-3 against the spread, and they covered as big underdogs at Boise State and Texas State.

Our model makes Utah State a 7.65-point favorite and lands on the same 63.5 total. That fair line works out to roughly 69% for the Aggies to win. For the first half we have Utah State by 4.32 and a total of 32.19.

One tested pattern fits this game: when favorites cover, their rushing totals tend to go over as well. If Utah State gets to anything near its projected ground output, the Aggie cover and the Aggie run game probably travel together.
