Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Georgia State leans on the run with Ayden Pereira likely at quarterback, while Coastal hunts turnovers and big plays to stay close.
  • Georgia State's ground game against a Coastal defense allowing 198.7 rushing yards per game, 128th of 138.
  • Our model makes Georgia State a 5.29-point favorite with a 56.07 total, a little above the 4-point spread and right on the 56 total.

Pereira and the ground game

Georgia State has never beaten Coastal Carolina in Atlanta, and it will probably try on Saturday without its starting quarterback. Cameran Brown is listed as doubtful. That likely hands the job to Ayden Pereira, who relieved Brown in the Oct. 24 loss at Arkansas State after Brown went 8-for-10.

Losing Brown costs Georgia State its passing touch. He completes 66.3% of his throws and set a school record with six touchdown passes in the homecoming win over Old Dominion. Pereira can still lean on the part of this offense that travels.

Georgia State runs for 205.3 yards per game, 22nd in the country. Coastal allows 198.7 rushing yards per game, 128th of 138. Its stuff rate (the share of runs stopped at or behind the line) is 14.6%, 125th. Coastal rarely wins at the point of attack, and a backup quarterback needs exactly that kind of help.

The back to watch is Qwantavius Wiggins, who averages 6.5 yards per carry and ran for 99 yards on just eight carries at Arkansas State. Our projection gives Georgia State 233 rushing yards. In our testing, favorites that cover tend to clear their rushing lines too, and this matchup fits that pattern.

Coastal's pocket under siege

Coastal's offense has one glaring weakness, and Georgia State is built to exploit it. The Chanticleers allow 2.71 sacks per game, 118th nationally. Their havoc allowed (the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or breakup) is 18.2%, 127th.

Georgia State's defense brings 3.0 sacks per game, 11th in the country. Xavier Esquillen leads the rush with 7.0 sacks. Against a protection this shaky, he can wreck drives.

Redshirt freshman Deuce Bailey survives on volatility. He completes only 53.4% of his passes but averages 8.0 yards per attempt. Coastal ranks 20th in explosiveness, which measures how much a successful play gains. His 71-yard touchdown to Robby Washington against App State shows the ceiling. Coastal will be without receiver Jayden Johnson.

If Georgia State sits on the pass, Coastal can run. Dominic Knicely has 333 rushing yards over his last three games, and Georgia State ranks 102nd in rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play). On third down, though, Georgia State allows a 28.7% conversion rate, sixth-best in the country. Coastal's offense lives on chunk plays because it struggles to stay on schedule.

Where Coastal steals possessions

Coastal's clearest route to an upset runs through turnovers and the kicking game. The Chanticleers force 2.0 takeaways per game, sixth in the country. Georgia State gives the ball away 1.71 times per game, 120th, and a new quarterback rarely helps that.

The punt game tilts the same way. Georgia State allows 30.5 yards per punt return, last among 136 teams. Coastal averages 20.2 yards per punt return, sixth nationally. A short field or two could keep Coastal close even if Georgia State controls the line of scrimmage.

Rest, history and the price

Coastal arrives off a bye with 15 days of rest, against seven for Georgia State. The Chanticleers are also 4-0 all time in Atlanta and won 40-27 in Conway last season. Both teams sit 1-2 in Sun Belt East play, so the loser falls well behind in the division.

The line has moved from Georgia State -6 to -4, with the total at 56. Our model sits close to the market: it makes Georgia State a 5.29-point favorite and gives the Panthers a 63% chance to win. There is no meaningful gap here beyond a little extra lean toward the Panthers. The more useful read is how the game should look: Georgia State running often, Coastal hunting turnovers and big plays.
