Cincinnati Bearcats vs Houston Cougars prediction: Conner Weigman gets his best shot at ending Houston's Cincinnati drought
The Bearcats have won five straight in the series, but a pass defense ranked near the bottom of FBS gives a full-go Weigman the cleanest path for No. 17 Houston.
| Spread | Houston -10.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 61.5 |
- Houston throws efficiently and moves the chains, while Cincinnati answers with Cole Tabb on the ground and keeps the score within reach for a while.
- Weigman and Amare Thomas against a Cincinnati secondary allowing 282.1 passing yards per game, 134th of 138.
- Our number makes Houston a 12.11-point favorite, slightly more than the market, and sees the total at 62.5, matching the line.
A streak with a soft spot
Houston hasn't beaten Cincinnati since 2016. The Bearcats have won five straight, which has pulled the all-time series to 15-15. This one comes at homecoming, with the No. 17 Cougars in the Big 12 title hunt and Cincinnati one win from bowl eligibility for a second straight season under Scott Satterfield.
This is the year the matchup tilts toward Houston, and it starts in the Cincinnati secondary. The Bearcats allow 282.1 passing yards per game, 134th of 138 FBS teams. Their passing EPA allowed, a measure of expected points added per dropback, ranks 122nd. Houston's passing EPA ranks 4th. Conner Weigman has thrown 20 touchdowns against 2 interceptions.
The Cincinnati defense has also been getting worse. Across its last three games, against West Virginia, Texas Tech and Utah, it allowed 39.3 points per game. Utah led 42-6 at halftime last week.
The question is Weigman's left ankle. He left the Utah loss in a walking boot and has been bothered by the ankle and foot, but he hasn't missed time and is a full go after Houston's bye.
Tabb against a sturdy front
Cincinnati's best answer is to run. The Bearcats rank 4th in rushing EPA and 3rd in line yards per carry, a stat that credits the offensive line for the yards it creates near the line of scrimmage. Cole Tabb has turned 79 carries into 752 yards, 9.5 per carry, and he has 422 yards over the last three games.
Houston is built to slow that. The Cougars allow 100.5 rushing yards per game, 21st nationally, and rank 27th in line yards allowed. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, ranks 32nd. Center Taran Tyo missed the Utah game but is expected to play, and Cincinnati needs him.
JC French adds a second threat with 289 rushing yards and 7 rushing scores. Tabb hasn't topped 16 carries in any of his last three games, though. If Cincinnati falls behind early again, his volume could shrink.
Third downs and red-zone trades
Houston lives on schedule. It leads FBS with a 53.0% success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense ahead of the chains, and converts 60.0% of third downs, also 1st. Cincinnati allows 43.9% on third down, 122nd. That points to long Houston drives.
The Cougars do have one weakness that gives Cincinnati a way to keep the score close. Houston allows 4.46 points per scoring opportunity, 132nd, so opponents who reach the red zone usually finish with touchdowns. Cincinnati scores 4.57 points per opportunity, 16th. When the Bearcats get deep, the drive tends to end with seven.
The Bearcats' kicker is a concern if a drive stalls: they have made just 6 of 9 field goals.
Rest and the pass rush
Houston comes in with 14 days of rest. Cincinnati has 7. The Cougars protect well, ranking 9th in havoc allowed (the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or breakup). Still, Utah's Jackson Bennee strip-sacked Weigman in Houston's last game, a key moment in that loss.
Patrick Bauer is the Bearcat most likely to recreate that play. He has 3.5 sacks over his last three games. Nose tackle Josh Hough also missed the Utah game and is expected back, which would strengthen the interior.
Where the number lands
Houston is a 10.5-point favorite, down from an open of 10.8, so the line has moved slightly toward Cincinnati. The total sits at 62.5. Our model makes it Houston by 12.11, about 37-25, and gives the Cougars a 78.0% chance to win. Its total matches the market.
Houston is 3-5 against the spread, so a short-yardage, possession-heavy team has had trouble beating big numbers. Our model sets the first half at Houston by 7.5. One correlation fits the model's lean: in tested games, favorites that cover tend to go over their rushing line, and Houston projects for 207 rushing yards.
