Charlotte 49ers vs UAB prediction: Henry Rutledge and Charlotte test UAB's soft run defense
UAB's defense smothers the pass and gets pushed around on the ground, so Charlotte's upset hopes depend on a back running behind one of the country's weakest lines.
| Spread | UAB -8.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 47.5 |
- UAB should control a slow, run-heavy game, but Charlotte's recent scoring uptick and UAB's stalled offense keep the 8.5-point spread within reach.
- Henry Rutledge against a UAB front ranked 132nd in line yards allowed. If Charlotte can't run, UAB's top-ranked pass defense takes over.
- Our model has UAB by 10.2, a bit more than the market's 8.5, and it agrees with the total.
Rutledge and the soft middle
UAB's defense is two different units depending on what the offense calls. Against the run, the Blazers allow 190.9 rushing yards per game, 124th in FBS. Their line yards allowed, a measure of how far opponents push the line of scrimmage on running plays, sits at 3.39 per carry, 132nd of 138. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, is 12.6%, which ranks 135th.
That is the opening for Henry Rutledge. He has 282 rushing yards over his last three games and averages 6.1 yards per carry on the season. He went for 123 at Temple and 121 against Tulane, the two games in which Charlotte stayed competitive.
The catch is Charlotte's own line. The 49ers average 2.45 line yards per carry, 135th, and their rushing EPA (expected points added per play) ranks 127th. Rutledge has produced in spite of his blocking, not because of it. Saturday puts two of the worst units in FBS against each other, and whichever one holds up better decides how long Charlotte stays in the game.
Harrell's arm hits a wall
Conner Harrell is projected to make his fifth start of the season after throwing for 239 yards and two touchdowns against Tulane. Charlotte led that game at halftime and then lost in overtime. The offense has improved with him. Over the recent stretch against North Texas, Temple and Tulane, Charlotte averaged 26.3 points, well above its season mark of 20.6. Cole Gonzales, who started earlier in the year, threw seven interceptions against three touchdowns, and Charlotte still gives the ball away 2.0 times per game, 134th.
Harrell now faces the stingiest pass defense in the country by yardage. UAB allows 116.0 passing yards per game, first in FBS, and ranks 6th in passing EPA allowed. It ranks 2nd in explosiveness allowed, meaning completions rarely turn into big gains. Some of that yardage figure comes from volume, since opponents run on UAB because it works. Even so, the efficiency numbers are real. Derrick Eley, with three touchdown catches over his last three games, needs to win downfield for Charlotte to keep pace.
Burton's line, Charlotte's missing rush
UAB's offense has been worse than its .500 record. Across games against Memphis, East Carolina and South Florida, the Blazers averaged 17.7 points with a 33.2% success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule. South Florida held UAB to 177 yards last week and forced two turnovers. Ryder Burton is completing 53.6% of his passes.
Protection is the weak spot. UAB allows 3.12 sacks per game, 128th, and a havoc rate of 18.5%, 129th (havoc counts tackles for loss, sacks, forced fumbles, interceptions and pass breakups). This week, though, Burton faces soft pressure. Charlotte's defense ranks 136th in havoc and 112th in sacks per game. A clean pocket against a secondary allowing 278.8 passing yards per game, 132nd, may be the Blazers' easiest path to points.
On the other side, Marlin Dean brings 8.5 sacks, including 3.5 in his last three games, against a Charlotte line that gives up 2.0 per game.
Hidden yards and the number
Charlotte bleeds field position. The 49ers allow 27.2 yards per kickoff return, 127th, and Tulane broke a 95-yard return in last week's comeback. Their offense starts drives at the 26.6-yard line on average, 126th. UAB has made 18 of 22 field goals, so short fields should turn into points.
The line opened at UAB -8.5 and hasn't moved, with the total at 47.5. Charlotte has covered its last two games as an underdog, including an outright 38-31 win at Temple. This is also the 10th annual Children's Harbor Game, and Charlotte won the last meeting 29-27 in 2024.
Our model makes it UAB 28.8, Charlotte 18.7, with a 74% win probability for the Blazers. If UAB covers, the likeliest path runs through its ground game, which projects for 166 rushing yards against a Charlotte defense allowing 186.6 per game.
