Charleston Southern vs Clemson Tigers prediction: Tait Reynolds and Clemson's battered offense get a needed tune-up

Clemson's offense ranks near the bottom of FBS, so this FCS visit is less about the result than whether the line and a freshman quarterback finally look functional.

Quick take
  • Clemson should control this comfortably, but its offense has struggled to finish drives even against weaker opponents.
  • Clemson's shaky pass protection against an FCS front, and whether freshman Tait Reynolds plays a clean game.
  • Our model doesn't price this game yet.

An offense searching for itself

Clemson comes out of its only bye of the season with one of the least productive offenses in the country. The Tigers score 19.4 points per game, 118th of 138 FBS teams. Their success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule, is 35.5%, which ranks 129th.

The problem starts up front. Clemson allows 3.4 sacks per game, 132nd nationally. Its havoc allowed rate (the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or pass breakup) is 18.2%, 124th. Swinney's Monday press conference dwelt on offensive line issues, and Jarvis Green is out. Kourtney Kelly could return if doctors clear him. He is getting live work.

That leaves Tait Reynolds, a freshman with three starts, playing behind a line that has not protected him. He has thrown three interceptions over those starts. Against Miami he passed for 295 yards but turned it over twice, including an interception returned for a touchdown on his final pass. Christopher Vizzina is still not fully recovered from his elbow injury and is expected to be the third quarterback behind Reynolds and Trent Pearman, so this job is Reynolds' to grow into.

The steadiest piece is Gideon Davidson. He has averaged 6.4 yards per carry over the last three games with four rushing touchdowns. A clean, run-heavy afternoon would serve Clemson well before the Virginia Tech homecoming game on Oct 24.

The Georgia Southern yardstick

Both teams have played Georgia Southern, which ranks 91st in SP+. Charleston Southern opened its season there and lost 0-31. Lek Powell, the starter that day, passed for only 69 yards.

Clemson beat the same Eagles 22-7 a week later. It was a comfortable win but not a dominant one, and Clemson closed as a 19.5-point favourite and failed to cover. The talent gap is real, but this Clemson offense has not shown it can pile up points just because the opponent is weaker.

The Buccaneers' recent form needs context. Over their last three games, against Point University, Gardner-Webb and South Carolina State, their defense held opponents to a 27.8% success rate. Those opponents are far below this level, and Charleston Southern's SRS rating of -34.8 shows the gap. When these teams last met in 2023, Clemson won 66-17.

A new quarterback tests a soft run defense

Charleston Southern changed quarterbacks last week. Coach Gabe Giardina started Jared Echols, a redshirt sophomore, over Powell, and Echols won his first career start against South Carolina State.

If Echols is going to keep the Bucs in the game, the ground game is his best tool. Clemson's run defense has struggled all season. It allows 3.55 line yards per carry (a measure of how far runners get before the defense makes contact), which ranks 136th. Its stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, is 11.5%, also 136th.

The pass defense is a different story. Clemson ranks 26th in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per play), and Elliot Washington II has three interceptions. The Tigers also tighten near the goal line, ranking 19th in points allowed per scoring opportunity. Charleston Southern can probably move the ball on the ground in spurts. Turning those drives into touchdowns is much harder.

Hidden yards on punts

The Bucs' surest path to points may come on special teams. In the South Carolina State win, Hakeem Watters returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown, and Quay Kindell took a kickoff back 98 yards.

That puts Clemson's punting in focus. The Tigers average 38.7 gross yards per punt, 134th nationally, and their net average ranks 114th of 136. Clemson's kicker has made 12 of 13 field goals, but the punting is a weakness. If Clemson's offense stalls again, those short punts give Watters chances to change field position.

Key players

  • Tait Reynolds (Clemson): The freshman has thrown three interceptions and one touchdown over his last three games.
  • Gideon Davidson (Clemson): He ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns at California and averages 6.4 yards per carry over his last three games.
  • Will Heldt (Clemson): He leads the front with 4.0 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss this season.
  • Elliot Washington II (Clemson): He has three interceptions, two of them at California.
  • Lek Powell (Charleston Southern): He completed 6 of 20 passes at Georgia Southern before losing the starting job to Jared Echols.
  • Dylan Mullins (Charleston Southern): He recorded 1.0 sack in the opener at Georgia Southern.
  • Jayden Hancock (Charleston Southern): He had four tackles and 1.0 tackle for loss against Georgia Southern.

Numbers that matter

Clemson sacks allowed per game3.4That ranks 132nd of 138, the clearest sign of a line that has failed its young quarterback.
Clemson success rate35.5%That ranks 129th, so the Tigers struggle to stay on schedule regardless of opponent.
Clemson stuff rate11.5%That ranks 136th, so the run is Charleston Southern's best way to sustain drives.
CSU at Georgia SouthernL 0-31Clemson beat the same opponent 22-7, a useful common reference point.
Clemson gross punting average38.7That ranks 134th, giving a CSU return unit that scored twice last week room to work.
