California Golden Bears vs NC State Wolfpack prediction: Cal's air-only offense tests NC State's worst unit in Goebbel's debut

The Bears can't run and can't stop the run, so Saturday turns on whether NC State's reshuffled pass defense can take away the one thing Cal does well.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • NC State should run at a Cal defense that has collapsed lately, while Cal throws on nearly every down against a vulnerable secondary.
  • Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and Cal's passing game against an NC State pass defense ranked 129th in EPA allowed, now under new play-caller Charlton Warren.
  • Our number makes NC State a 10.3-point favorite with a 74% win probability, slightly above the market's 9.5.

Cal's only lever is the pass

For the first time since 2012, NC State takes the field without Dave Doeren. He was fired Oct. 24, the day after a 31-28 loss at Stanford. Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel is the interim head coach for the final five games. Defensive coordinator DJ Eliot is gone too, and Charlton Warren now calls the defense.

Warren's first opponent has a simple plan. Cal throws for 285.2 yards per game, 16th nationally, and runs for 84.0, 137th of 138. That puts the game squarely on NC State's pass defense, which ranks 129th in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per play, a measure of how much each snap moves the scoreboard). The front won't bail the secondary out: the Wolfpack rank 114th in sacks per game.

Cal's volume does run ahead of its efficiency. The Bears rank 111th in passing EPA, so many of those yards are long, patient drives rather than big strikes. Sagapolutele has been accurate lately, completing 74.4% over his last three games. He started at SMU after a concussion-related absence earlier in October, but his status for Saturday hasn't been confirmed. Starting receiver Ian Strong is questionable, which pushes more targets toward Chase Hendricks.

A Cal line held together with tape

The reason Cal throws so much is visible up front. The Bears average 2.39 line yards per carry (how much push the blockers create on runs), 136th nationally, and rank 124th in havoc allowed, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble or pass breakup. Now starting tackles Frederick Williams III and Jimothy Lewis Jr. and starting guard Tyson Ruffins are all questionable.

NC State's defense has struggled almost everywhere, but it does one thing well. Its 22.9% stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, ranks 21st. Ashten Emory, himself questionable, has averaged 2.9 yards per carry over his last three games. If Cal's line is patched together, expect the Bears to abandon the run early.

The Wolfpack should run downhill

Flip the field and Cal's problems get worse. The Bears rank 134th in rushing EPA allowed and have been routed lately. Over their last three games they allowed a 52.3% success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) and 40.0 points per game. At SMU they led 20-17 at halftime, then gave up 42 unanswered points in the second half.

NC State's projection calls for 172 rushing yards. The Wolfpack will be shorthanded, though. Linemen Yousef Mugharbil and Spike Sowells Jr. are out, along with starters Daniel Cruz, Jojo Trader, Duke Scott and Tristan Teasdell. CJ Bailey keeps the offense humming regardless. He averages 8.1 yards per attempt, and NC State converts 52.5% of third downs, 10th nationally. This is one matchup where a tested pattern fits: when the favorite covers, its rushing goes over its line 33.9% of the time, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated.

Hidden yards lean Raleigh

Cal gives away yardage before the ball is snapped. The Bears commit 84.6 penalty yards per game, 136th nationally, and start their drives at the 26.4-yard line on average, 127th. For an offense that needs long drives, that is a heavy tax. NC State's kicker has made all seven field-goal tries, while Cal has hit 9 of 13.

Where the number lands

Neither team has rewarded backers: NC State is 2-5 against the spread, Cal 2-6. Cal's record comes against the tougher slate, with an average opponent SP+ of 7.0 against NC State's 2.2. The Wolfpack also lost outright at Stanford, 113th in SP+, as 7.5-point favorites.

The line opened NC State -7.5 and has moved to -9.5 across 30 books, a notable move toward the Wolfpack. Our model sits at NC State -10.32 with a fair total of 56.62, essentially matching the market's 56.5. For the first half, our numbers make it NC State -5.92 with a total of 28.66.
