Quick take
  • Western Michigan leans on Jalen Buckley, controls the clock, and Bowling Green's offense lacks the run game and finishing to keep pace.
  • Buckley against a Bowling Green front allowing 214.8 rushing yards per game, 133rd in FBS.
  • Our number makes Western Michigan a 13.98-point favorite, close to the market's 13, with an 81% home win probability.

Buckley against a broken front

Bowling Green arrives in Kalamazoo on Halloween with a three-game winning streak in this series. Its run defense is the reason that streak is in danger. The Falcons allow 214.8 rushing yards per game, 133rd of 138 FBS teams, and their front gives up 3.3 line yards per carry (the yardage blockers create at the line of scrimmage), which ranks 127th.

Western Michigan is built to take that. Jalen Buckley has 347 rushing yards over his last three games at 6.0 yards per carry, including 150 yards against Central Michigan. The Broncos rank 48th in rushing EPA (expected points added per play), and our projection has them running for 236 yards Saturday.

They need it, because the passing game won't carry them. Western Michigan throws for 163.8 yards per game, 128th nationally. Broc Lowry went 12 of 29 in the 45-38 loss at Toledo. Expect a steady diet of Buckley and Ofa Mataele, with Lowry adding keepers, against a defense that also ranks 99th in stuff rate (share of runs stopped at or behind the line).

Kastantin has to do everything

Bowling Green's offense runs through one arm. Jay Kastantin completed 71.2% of his passes over the last three games at 8.3 yards per attempt, and the Falcons averaged 31.0 points across that stretch. The catch is the opponents: Sacramento State, Ball State and Buffalo.

The ground game offers him no help. The Falcons rank 133rd in rushing EPA per play and 124th in line yards, and Austyn Dendy is averaging 3.6 yards per carry for the season. That leaves Kastantin throwing into obvious passing downs, and he has thrown 4 interceptions in his last three games.

Finishing compounds the problem. Bowling Green scores 2.73 points per scoring opportunity, 127th in FBS, while Western Michigan converts at 4.47, 24th. The Broncos also protect the ball, at 0.75 turnovers per game, 22nd. And their defense ranks 14th in explosiveness allowed, which limits the big plays a limited offense needs to stay close.

A streak against the standings

The rivalry history is real. Bowling Green won 34-10 the last time it played in Kalamazoo, in 2023, and beat the Broncos 31-13 a year ago.

The current form tells a different story. Bowling Green is 2-6 and ranks 130th in SP+. Its last two losses came against Ball State, 132nd in SP+, and Buffalo, which pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 31-24 win. Western Michigan is 3-1 in MAC play under Lance Taylor, the 2025 MAC Coach of the Year, and ranks 86th in SP+.

Hidden yards and the number

Field position tilts toward the home team too. Bowling Green nets 34.2 yards per punt, 134th of 136, while Western Michigan nets 42.1. Against an offense that sputters near the goal line, a short field for the Broncos is a recurring gift.

The market opened Western Michigan -13 and hasn't moved, with a total of 44.5. Our model lands almost on top of it: Western Michigan by 13.98, a total of 44.34, and a projected 29.2 to 15.2 final. That is agreement, not an edge. For the first half, our number is Western Michigan -7.29.

The game script fits one tested pattern. When favorites cover, their rushing tends to go over its line, and this matchup points squarely at Buckley and the Broncos' ground game. Both teams are 3-5 against the spread, so neither side has rewarded backers much this fall.
