Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Ole Miss controls the game through the air while Auburn's line keeps stalling drives. Brown's legs are the Tigers' best path to a backdoor cover.
  • Auburn's line, 136th in sacks allowed, against an Ole Miss front whose stuff rate ranks 19th and whose Blake Purchase is heating up.
  • Our model makes Ole Miss a 13.6-point favorite, slightly more than the market's 13, with the total almost exactly on 57.5.

Brown Under Siege

Auburn went to Athens and beat No. 1 Georgia. A week later it gave up seven sacks at home to LSU and lost by three touchdowns. That whiplash is the question hanging over this Halloween kickoff in Oxford, where No. 12 Ole Miss needs a clean win with Georgia on deck.

The protection problem is not a one-week blip. Auburn allows 4.29 sacks per game, 136th of 138 FBS teams. Its havoc allowed (the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or pass breakup) sits at 17.0%, 110th. Against LSU the Tigers managed 67 rushing yards, and Byrum Brown ran for just 21 after topping 100 in each of the two games before.

Ole Miss doesn't win with raw sack volume, ranking 82nd at 1.86 per game. It wins by killing runs at the line: its stuff rate (share of carries stopped at or behind the line) is 23.5%, 19th nationally. Edge rusher Blake Purchase has 3 sacks over his last three games. Auburn will be without OL Tai Buster. Jacob Strand left the LSU game with an apparent non-contact injury, and Golesh said only that he "will be fine."

Chambliss Needs a Clean Day

Trinidad Chambliss has the protection Brown lacks. Ole Miss allows 0.71 sacks per game, 6th in the country. His season line is strong: 16 touchdown passes at 7.4 yards per attempt.

The recent trend is not. Over his last three games Chambliss has completed 55.1% with 4 interceptions, and the Texas loss was the low point: 25 of 52 with three picks. Ball security is a team-wide issue, since Ole Miss turns it over 1.57 times per game, 110th.

Auburn's defense can exploit that. It takes the ball away 1.57 times per game, 29th. But the Tigers also allow 250.7 passing yards per game, 115th, so Chambliss and Deuce Alexander (610 receiving yards) should find room if they stay patient. Left tackle Terez Davis is questionable, though Golding sounded confident he'll be back. CB Jalyn Crawford, who intercepted Arch Manning twice at Texas, is also questionable.

Life Without Lacy

Golding confirmed Kewan Lacy is out with a shoulder dislocation from the Texas game, with no timetable. That hands the load to Makhi Frazier, who has averaged 6.5 yards per carry over his last three games, actually better than Lacy's 5.1 in that span.

Frazier gets a soft front. Auburn's stuff rate is 17.4%, 90th, and its rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play) ranks 85th. Ole Miss's line yards per carry, a measure of push up front, rank 40th. If the Rebels lean on Frazier with a lead, that fits a pattern we've tested: when a favorite covers, its rushing tends to clear its line.

Defenses Moving Opposite Ways

Ole Miss's season defensive numbers look ordinary, 89th in success rate allowed (share of opponent plays that stay on schedule). Recent games tell a different story. Across Vanderbilt, Missouri and Texas, the Rebels held opponents to a 33.9% success rate and 18.0 points per game.

Auburn is heading the other way. Against Tennessee, Georgia and LSU, it allowed a 48.1% success rate and 28.7 points per game. That stretch was brutal, and Auburn's schedule has been tougher overall (average opponent SP+ of 10.3 against Ole Miss's 8.0). Still, the Tigers are 2-5 against the spread, and the Georgia upset is their only cover in their last four games with a line.

History leans Auburn. The Tigers lead the series 35-13, including 13-4 in Oxford. This is the first meeting in three seasons.

Where the Number Sits

The line opened at Ole Miss -10.5 and has moved to -13 across 27 books, with the total at 57.5. Our model lands nearly in the same place: Ole Miss by 13.6, a 35.5-21.9 final, and an 81% win probability for the Rebels. Our first-half number is Ole Miss -7 with a total of 29.3.

What to watch - Whether Auburn's line keeps Brown clean on early downs, or he is scrambling by the second quarter. - Frazier's workload with Lacy out. - Chambliss's interceptions against a ball-hawking Auburn secondary. - Final status of Davis and Crawford, due about 90 minutes before kickoff.

Key players

  • Byrum Brown (Auburn): He leads Auburn with 480 rushing yards, but he has thrown 7 interceptions behind a line that can't protect him.
  • Keshaun Singleton (Auburn): His 36 catches for 431 yards lead the Tigers and give Brown a target against a pass defense ranked 102nd.
  • Elijah Melendez (Auburn): He has 57 tackles and 4 sacks, and he intercepted a pass in the Georgia upset.
  • Jeremiah Koger (Auburn): Questionable with an undisclosed injury, he has 230 receiving yards on 14 catches.
  • Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss): He has thrown 16 touchdown passes this season, but 4 interceptions in his last three games.
  • Makhi Frazier (Ole Miss): With Lacy out, he takes over after averaging 6.5 yards per carry across his last three games.
  • Deuce Alexander (Ole Miss): The Rebels' top target has 610 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns.
  • Blake Purchase (Ole Miss): He leads the defense with 4.5 sacks, 3 of them in his last three games.
