Quick take
  • Expect Arkansas to throw on most downs that matter, with Vanderbilt's turnovers and penalties deciding who finally wins an SEC game.
  • Our model doesn't price this game yet.

Everything falls on Jackson

Somebody leaves FirstBank Stadium with a first SEC win. Arkansas and Vanderbilt are both 0-3 in league play, the building is sold out, and Ryan Silverfield acknowledged Monday that his job is at risk if things don't improve. It is the first meeting since 2018, when Vanderbilt won 45-31 at Arkansas.

Arkansas cannot lean on the ground game to get there. The Razorbacks rank 134th of 138 in rushing EPA (expected points added per play). They are 129th in line yards per carry, a measure of how much push the blockers create, and that leaves them 131st in rushing yards per game.

So the night falls on KJ Jackson, listed as the starter ahead of AJ Hill. His protection has been the problem: Arkansas allows 2.67 sacks per game, 116th nationally.

Vanderbilt's one clear defensive strength points straight at that weakness. The Commodores rank 30th in sacks per game. Jackson's recent form adds worry: he threw for 111 yards at Texas A&M and 155 against Tennessee. Center Caden Kitler has been playing through an undisclosed injury and his status for Saturday is unclear, with Kash Courtney in line to start if Kitler can't.

Curtis and the giveaways

Vanderbilt's biggest opponent lately has been Vanderbilt. The Commodores turn it over 1.67 times a game (110th) and rank 115th in penalty yards per game. Against Ole Miss it boiled over. Clark Lea said penalties and turnovers gave away 32 points, and Vanderbilt was outscored 28-0 in the second quarter of a 52-17 loss.

He is still the Commodores' best route to a big play, averaging 7.4 yards per attempt, with Junior Sherrill (529 receiving yards) as his top target. There is no veteran fallback: Blaze Berlowitz broke his collarbone and will miss significant time.

Arkansas isn't built to punish those mistakes. The Razorbacks force 1.17 takeaways a game (77th) and rank 102nd in success rate allowed.

Arkansas played the harder slate

The records hide how differently these teams got here. Arkansas's FBS opponents carry an average SP+ rating of 14.3; Vanderbilt's average 8.2. The Razorbacks led Tennessee in the third quarter before losing 24-17, covering as 14-point underdogs.

Vanderbilt's recent trend runs the other way. Over its last three games, against Auburn, Georgia and Ole Miss, opponents hit a 52.2% success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) while the Commodores scored 15.3 points a game. Arkansas allowed a 40.3% success rate over its own last three, a sample that includes Tulsa.

The rating systems can't split them. FPI has Arkansas 61st and Vanderbilt 62nd.

What to watch

  • Finishing drives.
  • Chris Marshall. Arkansas's top receiver has 573 yards and faces a Vanderbilt defense 93rd in passing EPA allowed.
  • Kitler's status. A center change would put more strain on a line already struggling to block Vanderbilt's best unit.
  • Curtis's ball security. Early interceptions would hand Arkansas the short fields its offense can't create on its own.

Key players

  • KJ Jackson (Arkansas): Has 1,193 passing yards with 7 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, but managed 111 yards at Texas A&M.
  • Chris Marshall (Arkansas): The offense's engine with 573 yards, including 195 against Tulsa.
  • Quincy Rhodes Jr. (Arkansas): Leads the listed defenders with 3.0 sacks, 2.0 of them in the last three games.
  • Jared Curtis (Vanderbilt): Has 968 passing yards but 5 interceptions over his last three appearances.
  • Junior Sherrill (Vanderbilt): Top target with 529 yards, including 107 at Georgia.
  • Miles Capers (Vanderbilt): Has 6.0 tackles for loss in five games, the kind of disruption Arkansas's line has struggled to handle.
  • C.J. Heard (Vanderbilt): Leads the defense with 44 tackles and adds 3.0 sacks.

Numbers that matter
