Appalachian State Mountaineers vs Georgia Southern Eagles prediction: Max Johnson's health hangs over Georgia Southern's rivalry White Out
Georgia Southern is a 5.5-point favorite without a named quarterback, facing an App State team whose passer has spent October fighting through injury and a pass rush that hits home.
| Spread | Georgia Southern -6 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 55.5 |
- Georgia Southern's pass rush and App State's stalled run game point to a home win, but the Eagles' quarterback choice could change everything.
- Malachi Singleton against an Eagles defense ranked 25th in sacks per game, with App State unable to lean on the run.
- Our number makes Georgia Southern a 6-point favorite with a 56.5 total, almost exactly where the market sits.
The quarterback nobody has named
Two Sun Belt teams with one conference loss each, a rivalry billed as Deeper Than Hate and a White Out crowd at Paulson Stadium: the stakes are clear. The winner takes another step toward challenging James Madison for the division crown. The one thing nobody knows is who plays quarterback for the home team.
Max Johnson got hurt in the first half at Old Dominion and finished 6 of 8 for 29 yards. Clay Helton said Johnson had two positive throwing sessions and that the picture would clear after Wednesday's practice. Nothing has come out since, so his status for Saturday is unconfirmed. Turner Helton threw a touchdown pass in relief in the 23-15 win.
The difference matters because Johnson had been rolling. He threw for 343 yards and three scores against James Madison, and he has 11 touchdowns against 2 interceptions this season. Whoever starts gets a soft target. App State allows 231.1 passing yards per game, 101st in FBS, and ranks 114th with 1.29 sacks per game. A pocket passer should have time. Running back David Mbadinga, who averages 6.0 yards per carry, is also dealing with an undisclosed injury, and his availability is unclear.
Singleton runs into the rush
App State's own quarterback has had a choppy month. Malachi Singleton averages 8.1 yards per attempt on the season, but over the last three games that has dropped to 6.4. The low point came against Old Dominion, when he went 5 of 23 for 72 yards in a home loss. He then missed the second half at Coastal Carolina, where Henry Hasselbeck took over and ran 21 times for 125 yards.
Singleton was cleared and back for James Madison, going 26 of 40 for 271 yards and two touchdowns in the overtime upset. That version can hurt Georgia Southern, whose defense ranks 98th in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per play, a measure of how much each throw moves the scoreboard). App State's passing EPA ranks 35th.
The catch is getting the ball out. Georgia Southern ranks 25th with 2.57 sacks per game and 31st in havoc rate (the share of plays that end in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup) at 17.9%. Anthony Bynum has 3 sacks in his last three games. If he lives in the backfield, the Old Dominion version of Singleton is the one to expect.
App State can't lean on the run
Most quarterbacks under pressure get help from the run game. App State hasn't had much of one. Its line yards per carry, a measure of how much push the offensive line gets, sit at 2.74, 121st in FBS. Its rushing EPA ranks 105th.
Georgia Southern is built to shut that down. The Eagles rank 24th in stuff rate (runs stopped at or behind the line) at 22.7%, and 29th in rushing EPA allowed. Jaquari Lewis has found the end zone 8 times, but half of those came in one game at Coastal Carolina.
That leaves App State throwing on third and long, and it converts 36.5% of third downs, 97th nationally. Recent form tells the same story: over the last three games, App State's offensive success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) is 39.9%, while Georgia Southern's is 46.4%.
Hidden yards favor the visitors
If App State keeps it close, the kicking game could flip it. Georgia Southern has made 8 of 14 field goals, a 57.1% rate that ranks 125th. App State is 12 of 15, and kicker James London won the James Madison game with a 40-yard field goal in overtime, even though he couldn't see out of his right eye after a teammate struck him while signaling.
The Eagles' coverage units are worse. They allow 24.4 yards per punt return, 134th of 136, and their net punting ranks 126th. Add 73.4 penalty yards per game, 121st, and Georgia Southern has given away yardage all season.
Rest, schedule and the number
Georgia Southern comes in on 16 days of rest, App State on 9. That extra week is the best case for Johnson's recovery. The schedules also differ. App State's FBS opponents average a -7.4 SP+, while Georgia Southern's average 0.2, so the Eagles' 3-4 record came against tougher teams than the Mountaineers' 5-2. The ratings call these teams even: Georgia Southern is 94th in SP+, App State 95th.
The rivalry has gone one way lately. Georgia Southern has won the last three meetings, including 29-10 in the second 2025 meeting. Both teams have been reliable for bettors: Georgia Southern is 6-1 against the spread, App State 5-2.
The line opened and sits at Georgia Southern -5.5, with a total of 56.5. Our model lands at -6.05 and a 56.5 total, giving the Eagles a 65% chance to win. That is no real disagreement with the market. The quarterback news is the variable neither number has fully priced.
