Air Force Falcons vs Army Black Knights prediction: Air Force's ground game hunts Army's third-down problem at West Point
The Falcons can win the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy outright by doing what Army's defense has failed to stop all year, even with a question mark at the top of their backfield.
| Spread | Army -4 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 43.5 |
- Expect a grinding, possession-heavy game with few passes, where the defense that gets one more third-down stop likely decides it.
- Air Force's line, first nationally in line yards per carry, against an Army run defense ranked 128th in line yards allowed.
- Our number makes Army a 3.84-point favorite with a 45 total, close to the market's Army -3 and 45.
Army can't get off the field
The Commander-in-Chief's Trophy is on the line Saturday night at Michie Stadium, and Air Force can claim it outright with a win. The way there runs straight through the weakest part of Army's team.
Army's defense allows opponents to convert 50.5% of third downs, 136th of 138 FBS teams. Air Force converts 51.7% of its own, 10th nationally. For two option offenses that each want to hold the ball, that gap may be the whole game. Every Falcon third-and-4 that moves the chains is another six minutes Army's offense watches from the sideline.
The trench numbers point the same way. Air Force leads the country in line yards per carry (a measure of how much push the offensive line creates on runs) at 3.73. Army ranks 128th in line yards allowed and 128th in stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line. Army's defense ranks 130th in EPA allowed (expected points added per play), and it has been worse lately: opponents posted a 53.2% success rate over the last three games, a span that ended with a 49-22 loss at Memphis.
Who carries the load for Air Force
The trench advantage is clear. Who gets the ball is not. Liam Szarka has been out for the season since early October. Evan Medders, who ran for 381 yards and five touchdowns across a three-game stretch from Northern Illinois through Wyoming, has turf toe and missed the UConn win. Calhoun said Tuesday the staff was not expecting him to be ready but did not rule him out, and Medders had not run a full-speed rep in practice.
The Falcons barely missed him last week. Kemper Hodges ran for 200 yards and four touchdowns against UConn and is the most likely option to carry the offense again. Freshman Howard Fisher IV started that game, and Air Force hasn't confirmed whether he starts again. Owen Allen remains the steady hand at 4.2 yards per carry across 106 attempts.
What the Falcons won't do is throw. They average 58.4 passing yards per game, last in FBS, and their passing EPA ranks 135th. The flip side is ball security: Air Force allows the lowest havoc rate in the country (the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or pass breakup).
Hellums against a soft Falcon front
Army's offense is the better unit, and the reason is Cale Hellums. The quarterback has run for 874 yards and 17 touchdowns, including 195 yards and five scores against Florida Atlantic. Army leads the nation in rushing EPA per play and in rushing yards per game at 342.5, and it turns the ball over just 0.5 times a game, 4th nationally.
Air Force's defense is built to bend. It ranks 119th in line yards allowed, 100th in stuff rate and 98th in havoc. Godspower Nwawuihe has found room lately at 6.9 yards per carry over his last three games, and Samari Howard averages 8.7 yards per carry on limited work.
The warning sign is Memphis. Hellums managed 34 rushing yards in that loss, the only time in his last three games he was held under 100. Air Force's defense also slipped recently, allowing 28.3 points a game over its last three.
The line moved toward the Falcons
Army opened as a 6-point favorite and now sits at -3 across 27 books, with the total at 45. The market has moved toward Air Force despite the quarterback uncertainty, likely helped by Hodges' breakout and Army's no-show in Memphis.
History leans Army and leans low. The Black Knights have won four of the last five meetings, and four of those five games produced fewer than 30 combined points. Last year's game ended 20-17 at Air Force. Monken has won 13 of his last 18 games against Air Force and Navy.
Our model makes Army a 3.84-point favorite, a final around 24.4 to 20.6, with the home side winning 60% of the time. That sits less than a point from the market. The fair total of 45 matches the posted number exactly. For the first half, our number has Army -3.03 with a total of 23.46.
