Yale Bulldogs vs UCF Knights prediction: Dior Johnson's 41-point opener sets the bar for Yale in Orlando
UCF rebuilt around transfers who can score in bunches, but a Yale team that hunts second chances gets a crack at a defense that hasn't shown it can finish possessions.
| Spread | UCF -9 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 152.5 |
- UCF's transfer-built offense should score, but slow-paced Yale crashes the glass and can keep this tighter than Johnson's opener suggests.
- Yale's offensive rebounders against UCF's defensive glass, which ranks 289th in defensive rebound rate after one game.
- UCF sits at -9.5, unchanged since our feed first saw it, after allowing 125.0 points per 100 possessions in its opener.
Johnson scores, UCF still bleeds
Dior Johnson needed 15 shots to score 41 points in UCF's opener, a program season-opener record, and the Knights still needed overtime to get past Florida Gulf Coast 96-95. That's the puzzle Yale brings to Addition Financial Arena on Friday night: a Big 12 roster that can pile up points and hasn't yet shown it can get stops.
Johnson, back at UCF for a second stint after averaging 24.0 points at Tarleton State last season, used 34.7% of the Knights' possessions while he was on the floor. Lewis Walker, a North Carolina A&T transfer, added 16 off the bench. The defense was the problem. UCF allowed 125.0 points per 100 possessions, 320th of 360 teams, to an FGCU side that came in rated well outside the top 200.
Some of that is a new group learning each other. UCF brought in 11 newcomers and returns just 17.8% of last season's minutes, so last season's team numbers say little about this version. Big 12 coaches picked the Knights 13th of 16.
Yale's misses become extra chances
Yale's opener was ugly in a way that might not last. The Bulldogs posted a 41.4% effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure where threes count 1.5 times), 318th nationally, and hit just 39.0% inside the arc. Riley Fox scored 19 but needed 17 shots. Courtney Wallace went 1 of 11 off the bench.
The saving grace was the offensive glass. Yale rebounded 52.4% of its own misses against Howard, 13th in the country, with Daniel Ogunyemi pulling down 11 boards. UCF's defensive rebounding ranks 289th after its opener. If Yale's shots keep clanging, the second chances could decide whether this stays within the number.
This isn't last season's Yale, which shot 39.6% from three, second nationally. Nick Townsend left for Stanford and Isaac Celiscar for Baylor, and Yale returns 36.8% of its minutes. Captain Trevor Mullin, Fox and Jordan Brathwaite lead the players who are back.
UCF lives at the line
UCF's other weapon is the foul line. The Knights posted a free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 65.5% in their opener, 13th nationally, but made only 65.8% of those attempts. Leaving points at the stripe nearly cost them against FGCU.
Yale's defense has historically refused to give those points away. Last season the Bulldogs ranked 10th in opponent free throw rate, and they held Howard to 23.5% in the opener. On the other end, Yale made 86.4% of its free throws, 15th in the country, which matters if this comes down to the final minutes.
Tempo and the number
Yale plays slow. Its 65.5 possessions per 40 minutes ranked 328th in the opener, close to last season's deliberate style. Fewer possessions mean fewer chances for UCF's scorers to pull away, and Yale opened with a cover at -7.5 and an under against a 153.5 total. UCF, a 22.5-point favorite, won by one and went over.
The market hasn't budged: UCF -9.5 matches the first line our feed recorded, and the total has ticked from 152.0 to 152.5. Neither team had reported an injury heading into Friday. Yale opens a road stretch here that continues at Baylor on Nov. 10.
What to watch
- Johnson's shot volume. He can't keep up 13 of 15 shooting; how UCF scores when he cools off is the question.
- Yale's offensive boards. Second chances are Yale's clearest path to covering.
- UCF at the line. A high free throw rate means little at 65.8% shooting.
- Fox's efficiency. Yale's leading scorer needs better looks than he got against Howard.
