Portland Pilots vs UT-Arlington Mavericks prediction: UT Arlington's rebuilt defense tests Portland's record-setting opener in Honolulu

Both rosters are almost new, so this Rainbow Classic opener asks whether K.T. Turner's defensive identity outlasts a near-total turnover against a Portland offense that just scored 133.

Quick take
  • Expect a choppy, low-margin game between two rebuilt rosters. UT Arlington's length and shot-blocking try to slow a Portland team riding transfer guards.
  • James O'Donnell, Portland's top returning forward, against Niko Bundalo and a UT Arlington front line that blocked shots all night in its opener.
  • Portland is a 1.25-point favorite, down from 1.5, and the total rose to 150.5. UT Arlington allowed 66.7 points per game last season.

A defense that survived the purge

UT Arlington's calling card last season was simple: nobody could shoot against it. The Mavericks held opponents to 26.7% from three, 1st in Division I, and finished 12th nationally in defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions) on the way to an 18-14 record.

Almost none of those players are back. Players on this roster account for just 6.1% of last season's minutes, and Miles Goodman is the only returnee who saw action. So last season's numbers describe K.T. Turner's system more than this team. The early evidence says the system traveled. In an 89-56 win over UNT Dallas, a non-Division I opponent, the Mavericks blocked 20.5% of opponent two-point tries, and Bundalo had three blocks alongside 12 rebounds.

That's the central question Friday night: does a new group play the same suffocating style against a Division I offense in its first real test?

Portland's new backcourt carries the load

Portland's 133-89 win over Willamette on Nov. 2 set a program scoring record, and all 14 players scored. Treat that line as a warmup, not a rating. Willamette is not a Division I team.

The more useful information is who is doing the scoring. Shantay Legans lost Joel Foxwell, who averaged 15.6 points last season and is now at Arizona State. Only 25.7% of last season's minutes return. The replacements are transfers. Jaxon Olvera averaged 13.7 points at Louisiana, though on 46.0% effective shooting (a field goal percentage where threes count 1.5 times). Hunter Adam made 39.4% of his threes at Davidson.

The anchor is O'Donnell, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds in 17 minutes against Willamette. RJ Nance Jr. added 15 off the bench. If UT Arlington's length pushes Portland off the rim, the Pilots need Adam and Olvera to win the perimeter battle the Mavericks dominated a year ago.

Who gives the ball away

Both programs turned the ball over a lot last season. Portland coughed it up on 19.5% of possessions (334th), and UT Arlington was worse at 20.3% (349th). New guards on both sides could change that, but neither team has shown it yet against real competition.

The second-chance battle leans toward the Mavericks. They grabbed 36.1% of their own misses last season, 31st nationally, while Portland's defensive rebounding ranked 256th. In a game this close, a handful of extra possessions could decide it.

A short number on a neutral floor

The Stan Sheriff Center is neutral ground, and the market treats this as close to even. Portland opened at 1.5 in our feed and now sits at 1.25, a small move toward UT Arlington. The total climbed a point, from 149.5 to 150.5.

That rising total runs against UT Arlington's recent profile. Last season the Mavericks played at a modest pace, 200th nationally, and allowed 66.7 points per game, 24th in the country. Portland ran faster, 80th in pace. The total depends on whether Portland's push or UT Arlington's half-court defense sets the tempo.

Free throws could also matter in a one-possession game. UT Arlington made 60.0% at the line in its opener. It's the Mavericks' first game as a United Athletic Conference program, picked fifth in the league's preseason poll, and an early neutral-court win would mean something for a team still learning who it is.

What to watch

  • Portland's threes: Adam and Olvera shooting over UT Arlington's length is the Pilots' cleanest path.
  • O'Donnell vs. Bundalo: the paint battle decides whether Portland can score inside at all.
  • Turnovers early: two rebuilt backcourts, one late tip, and a long trip for both.
