North Florida Ospreys vs UCLA Bruins prediction: Can North Florida's rebuilt defense survive UCLA's Pauley opener?

UCLA comes home off an upset of Arizona, and the 31.5-point line assumes North Florida still defends like the team that finished near the bottom of the country last season.

Quick take
  • UCLA's guards should control the ball and the scoreboard early; the open question is how long North Florida's mostly new defense keeps the margin respectable.
  • Watch Trent Perry and Jaylen Petty against a North Florida backcourt that gave the ball away 24.0 times per 100 possessions in its opener.
  • UCLA is a 34-point favorite with a 155.5 total; the spread has moved from 31.5 to 34 since our feed first saw it, and North Florida allowed 88.2 points per game last season.

A big number built on last season

A big number built on last season The market has made up its mind, and it has pushed further in UCLA's direction. UCLA is favored by 34, and the line has moved from 31.5 since our feed first recorded it Friday morning. That number leans heavily on what North Florida was a year ago, when its adjusted defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) was 124.5, which ranked 362nd of 365. The Ospreys gave up 88.2 points per game, 364th in the country.

The catch is that this is a different roster. Only 42.9% of last season's minutes return, and the team lost leading scorer Kamrin Oriol and his 20.9 points per game. Bobby Kennen is running the team with a largely returning lineup, though whether he holds the job on an interim basis is still unconfirmed. The opener offered a sliver of hope: North Florida won 71-63 at California Baptist as a double-digit underdog, holding the Lancers well under the total.

Perry and the new backcourt

UCLA opened by beating an Arizona team rated third nationally in adjusted net efficiency, 84-75 in Las Vegas, as an underdog. Trent Perry carried the load with 21 points. Texas Tech transfer Jaylen Petty made 4 of 6 threes and handed out 7 assists, a sign Mick Cronin has found a playmaker to replace Donovan Dent.

The Bruins also protected the ball. Their turnover rate of 9.5% against Arizona ranked 10th nationally, in line with a program that was elite at ball security last season.

Depth is thinner than it looks. Auburn transfer Filip Jovic missed the opener, and UCLA said Thursday he is nursing a sprained left ankle, so his status is uncertain. Sergej Macura and freshman Joe Philon III filled bench minutes against Arizona. Guard Eric Freeny was away from the team on a leave of absence for a medical issue as of early October, with no update since.

Where North Florida can bleed

The Ospreys' biggest problem in the opener was giveaways. Their turnover rate of 24.0% ranked 321st of 360, and that came against a California Baptist team, not a Big Ten defense. UCLA did not force many turnovers against Arizona, so the damage may come more from the Ospreys' own mistakes than from pressure.

The second problem is the rim. UCLA blocked 23.3% of Arizona's two-point attempts, 14th nationally, with Nikola Kusturica swatting 3 in 39 minutes. North Florida lives inside: its guards and forwards scored efficiently on twos at Cal Baptist, but Kent Jackson needed 15 shots to score 15 points, going 4 of 15. If Jackson forces it again, UCLA's length will feast.

Tempo and the total

Tempo and the total The 155.5 total, up from 153.5 when our feed first recorded it, implies a faster game than Cronin usually plays. Last season UCLA ran at 64.9 possessions per 40 minutes, 310th in the country. Against Arizona the Bruins played at 75, a much quicker game, and it went over.

North Florida wanted to run last season, ranking 20th in pace, and its opener stayed under a 155.5 total. A UCLA lead this large could push the Bruins to empty the bench late, which cuts both ways for the total.
