Oakland Golden Grizzlies vs Stanford Cardinal prediction: Stanford's paint scoring tests an Oakland team rebuilt from scratch
The Cardinal scored at will inside the arc in their opener, and Oakland's new-look roster offers almost no rim protection, so the Golden Grizzlies' best counter is the offensive glass.
| Spread | Stanford -13.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 146.5 |
- Stanford plays slow and pounds the paint; Oakland's hope is crashing the offensive glass and getting to the line to keep a two-touchdown margin closer.
- Stanford's interior finishers, Nick Townsend and Aidan Cammann, against an Oakland front line that blocked almost nothing at Michigan.
- Stanford is favored by 14, down from -14.5. The Cardinal won their opener 74-65 but failed to cover -14.5.
Stanford lives inside the arc
Both programs spent the offseason starting over. Oakland returns 9.9% of last season's minutes and not one starter. Stanford brings back 17.0% and leans on freshmen and three transfers. Friday's game at Maples Pavilion is an early look at which rebuild is further along, and the Cardinal are laying 14 points.
The clearest edge is close to the basket. Against Eastern Washington, Stanford made 74.2% of its two-point shots, 13th in the country. Townsend and Cammann each shot 83.3% from the floor. One game is a small sample, but the profile is plain: the Cardinal want the ball near the rim.
Oakland's interior defense looked thin at Michigan. The Wolverines made 64.9% of their twos, which ranks 334th, and Oakland blocked just 2.7% of opponent two-point tries, 340th. Michigan sits first in adjusted net rating, so some of that is the opponent. Still, nothing in that box score suggests Oakland can wall off the paint.
Oakland's way in is the glass
The Golden Grizzlies shot poorly at Michigan, but they kept possessions alive. Oakland grabbed 44.7% of its own misses (offensive rebound rate), 53rd nationally. Chris Fields Jr., a transfer from Campbell, pulled down 10 rebounds in 34 minutes.
That effort lines up with a Stanford weakness. The Cardinal secured only 60.6% of opponent misses in their opener, 314th. Second chances are the most realistic way for a short-handed offense to keep pace on the road.
Oakland also got to the line. Its free throw rate, free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt, was 47.6%, 74th. A physical game that sends Fields and Nassim Mashhour to the stripe would slow Stanford's runs and help an underdog getting this many points.
Two benches full of new faces
Greg Kampe is in his 42nd season at Oakland, and he is working with an almost entirely new rotation. Mashhour is the main holdover. Belal El Shakery arrived from New Hampshire and Fields from Campbell. Last season's Oakland numbers describe a different team, so they are a weak guide here.
Kyle Smith, in his third season at Stanford, earned his 300th win as a college head coach on Monday. He has called this group really, really young, with a lot of work to do. Freshmen Julius Price and Aziz Olajuwon both started the opener.
Townsend's status is the key availability note. The Yale transfer sat out the exhibition while awaiting a ruling in Glancey v. NCAA. A California preliminary injunction on Oct. 20 granted him eligibility through this season, and he played heavy minutes against Eastern Washington. The NCAA plans to appeal. No Stanford injuries had surfaced as of Nov. 5.
Slow tempo and a big number
Stanford played at 63 possessions per 40 minutes in its opener, 346th in the country. Fewer possessions give a 14-point favorite fewer chances to pull away. That is part of why the Cardinal won 74-65 and still fell short of a -14.5 closing number.
Oakland, meanwhile, lost 68-84 at Michigan but covered as a 27.5-point underdog. The market has moved slightly its way. The spread opened in our feed at -14.5 and now sits at -14. The total has dipped from 150.75 to 150.5, and both teams went under in their openers.
If Stanford controls the pace and the paint, it can win comfortably without racing. If Oakland turns misses into putbacks and free throws, a margin in the low teens is well within reach.
