Last season's Lancers are gone
By last season's final adjusted ratings, Cal Baptist was the stronger program. The Lancers finished 106th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) and made their first NCAA tournament, while Oregon State sat 176th. That gap tells you little about tonight.
Cal Baptist returns just 13.5% of last season's minutes under first-year coach Kyle Getter. The biggest loss is Dominique Daniels Jr., who averaged 23.1 points a game. The new group opened with a 63-71 home loss to North Florida, a team ranked 332nd in adjusted net efficiency, as a 10.75-point favorite. Two weeks earlier the Lancers lost an exhibition at No. 22 UCLA, 100-53, and the Big West preseason poll picked them ninth.
Oregon State is also starting over. Justin Joyner, hired in March to replace Wayne Tinkle, opened his tenure with a 102-61 win over Weber State as the Beavers returned to the Pac-12. Point guard Josiah Lake II is the lone returning starter, surrounded by transfers.
Threes that won't fall
Cal Baptist's opener came down to shooting. The Lancers made 14.8% of their threes, 352nd in Division I, and posted a 38.3% effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times), 333rd. Ethan Duncan went 1-for-8 from the floor and freshman Steven Reynolds III went 3-for-11.
This is a poor spot to find a rhythm. Oregon State held Weber State to 17.1% from deep, 21st nationally. Cal Baptist's opponent-adjusted defense was 50th last season, but with this little returning, that number is a weak guide. Jordan Muller, one of the few holdovers, was the steadiest scorer with 15 points off the bench.
Paint touches and free throws
