Wagner Seahawks vs Miami Hurricanes prediction: Wagner's rebuilt roster drags its slow tempo into a 39-point test at Miami

Miami should win comfortably in its home opener; the question is whether a Wagner team with no returning minutes plays slowly enough to keep the margin under the number.

Quick take
  • Miami should control the paint and the foul line, but Wagner's slow tempo caps the possessions available for building a huge margin.
  • Acaden Lewis, who scored 24 against Florida, attacking a Wagner defense that ranked 307th in opponent free throw rate at Boston College.
  • Miami has moved from -33 to -39 since our feed first saw it; Wagner's 63.5-possession pace is the number pushing back.

A rout priced, a slow game ahead

Miami opened its season with a 77-67 loss to Florida, the preseason No. 1, on a neutral floor. Its home opener brings a Wagner program that has started over completely: a coach hired in April and a roster with no minutes from last season. Nobody doubts the winner. The live question is whether a deliberate, unfamiliar visitor can keep the margin under a towering spread.

The market has grown more confident in a blowout. Our feed first saw Miami at -33, and the line now sits at -39. The total has drifted the other way, from 147.25 to 145.5.

Wagner's tempo is the counterweight. The Seahawks played at 63.5 possessions per 40 minutes at Boston College, 344th of 360. Last season's team, coached and staffed by different people, ranked 346th in pace, so slow basketball appears to be the program's habit. Miami ran 69.5 possessions against Florida. Every possession Wagner drains off the clock is one fewer chance for Miami to add to the lead.

Wagner starts from zero

Wagner returns 0.0% of last season's minutes, which makes last season's 14-17 team a poor guide. Dwan McMillan was named head coach on April 20, and the roster is built from transfers plus four freshmen.

The debut was rough. Wagner posted an effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure where threes count 1.5 times) of 33.0% at Boston College, 352nd nationally. Cam Estevez carried the load and went 0-for-6 from three, though he made 40.6% of his threes last season at Fairfield in a smaller role. Kareem Watson added 13 points off the bench.

There was one push. Wagner cut the deficit to 50-38 with 10:05 remaining before Boston College pulled away again. That came against a Boston College side ranked 152nd in opponent-adjusted net efficiency, a far easier assignment than an AP No. 14 Miami team.

Miami lives at the line

Free throw rate measures free throw attempts per field goal attempt, and it's where this matchup tilts hardest. Miami drew fouls at a 50.0% rate against Florida, 60th nationally, even while shooting poorly. Wagner's defense allowed Boston College a 49.0% rate, 307th.

That suits a Miami offense still searching for its jumper. The Hurricanes made 23.5% of their threes against Florida, and Wagner's perimeter defense allowed Boston College to shoot 41.2% from deep. Free throws stop the clock and add points without using extra possessions, which is how a heavy favorite stretches a lead in a slow game. Wagner's one small edge is its own free throw shooting: 76.5%, 72nd nationally.

Miami's new pieces and who's missing

Miami brings back 42.6% of last season's minutes and leans on transfers. Acaden Lewis, from Villanova, took over the Florida game with 24 points on 9-of-20 shooting. Georgia transfer Somto Cyril was efficient inside, going 4-of-5 for 13 points.

The returners struggled. Shelton Henderson went 2-of-13, and Malik Reneau, who averaged 18.9 points last season, made 1 of 6 shots. Reneau and center Egor Ryzhov missed the Oct. 23 exhibition against Vanderbilt, but both appeared in the Florida box score on Nov. 2. No newer report on either has surfaced. Marcus Allen and L.J. Cason are both out for the season with torn ACLs.

The gap between the programs is wide. Last season's final adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) put Miami 33rd and Wagner 299th, and nearly all of Wagner's production has turned over since then.
