Voorhees vs Wofford prediction: Wofford's rebuilt backcourt gets a home tune-up against NAIA Voorhees

With roughly a third of last season's minutes back, the Terriers' home game against Voorhees is a chance to learn who replaces their departed scorers.

Quick take
  • Wofford should control a Division I vs. NAIA mismatch; the useful information is the rotation, not the result.
  • Watch how transfer Chris Arias and returner Chace Watley split the shots that left with Wofford's top scorers.
  • No spread or total had been posted. Last season's defense, 298th of 365 in efficiency, is the number that matters most for any total.

A roster starting over

Wofford went 19-13 last season, and most of that team is gone. Players on this year's roster logged just 32.4% of last season's minutes and 25.4% of its points. Kahmare Holmes (19.5 points per game) left for DePaul, and Nils Machowski (17.2) went to UConn. Cayden Vasko, the primary distributor, is at UCF.

That makes last season's team numbers a weak guide. The offense ranked 74th in efficiency (points per 100 possessions) and 16th in turnover rate. Both owed plenty to guards who no longer wear Wofford colors.

The Terriers added four transfers and four freshmen in the spring. Arias, from Jacksonville, is the one newcomer with a shooting line we can see. He hit 36.1% from three last season and 84.4% at the line.

Who carries the scoring

Watley is the leading returner at 9.7 points per game, though his 30.6% three-point shooting last season leaves room to grow. Brian Sumpter offers the interior presence. He shot 59.9% from the floor and blocked 1.3 shots per game in a starter's role.

A game against an NAIA opponent is where second-year coach Kevin Giltner can test lineups. Look for how the minutes sort out among the eight newcomers.

The schedule around it

This game comes at the end of a hard opening stretch. Wofford's regular season opens Nov. 3 at No. 8 Tennessee, followed by a Nov. 6 game against North Carolina.

The Terriers showed some fight in October. They took Virginia Tech to the buzzer in a 78-76 exhibition loss. "Really happy with our team," Giltner said afterward.

The defense remains the open question. Last season it ranked 298th in efficiency and 333rd in opponent three-point percentage. A lopsided home game won't settle that, but it is one more look before the conference season.

Key players

  • Chace Watley (Wofford): Wofford's top returning scorer averaged 9.7 points last season on a 21.3% usage rate.
  • Chris Arias (Wofford): Hit 36.1% of his threes at Jacksonville last season, the best mark among Wofford's returners and arrivals with real volume.
  • Brian Sumpter (Wofford): Shot 59.9% from the floor with 1.3 blocks per game last season in 21 starts.
