Virginia-Lynchburg vs Western Carolina prediction: Western Carolina's rebuilt roster gets a tune-up against Virginia-Lynchburg

With barely a seventh of last season's minutes back, the Catamounts' real opponent in Cullowhee is their own unfamiliarity.

Quick take
  • Expect Western Carolina to control a mismatch against an NCCAA visitor, with the interest in which newcomers seize roles before SoCon play.
  • Watch Samuel Dada on the glass: last season he pulled 7.6 rebounds in 20.3 minutes, and he's now a featured returner.
  • No spread or total is posted yet; last season's 124-62 Western Carolina win in this series is the only reference point.

A roster rebuilt from scratch

Western Carolina went 15-16 last season and then watched nearly everyone leave. Players on this season's roster account for just 14.9% of last season's minutes and 10.8% of its points, so last year's team numbers say little about this group. The two leading scorers are gone: Cord Stansberry (14.1 points per game) to Missouri and Marcus Kell (13.7) to Furman, the team picked to win the SoCon. The Catamounts were picked eighth of 11.

Tim Craft, entering his third season, now works with four returners, eight transfers and four freshmen. Forward Chase McKey was ruled out for last season in December 2025 and planned to seek a medical hardship waiver; there has been no update since Dec. 31, 2025.

Where the points come from

The scoring will come from transfers. Malachi Brown started 31 games at Georgia State last season, averaging 12.2 points and making 61 threes. Isaiah Manning scored 10.7 points per game at Sam Houston with an offensive rating of 127.6 (points produced per 100 possessions used), and Travelle Bryson averaged 8.8 at Howard.

The returning anchor is Dada, who shot 69% from the field last season in a low-usage interior role. The early returns are encouraging: Western Carolina won an exhibition at Appalachian State 83-76 on Oct. 20.

A brutal week for the visitors

Virginia-Lynchburg is an NCCAA member, not a Division I program, and it plays a money-game schedule. The Dragons face The Citadel on Nov. 10, play in Cullowhee the next night and visit Coastal Carolina on Nov. 12. Kevin Johnson was their coach as of December 2025.

The only prior meeting was lopsided: Western Carolina won 124-62 on Dec. 2, 2025. For Western Carolina, this is a chance to sort out rotations after opening at North Carolina on Nov. 2.

Key players

  • Samuel Dada (Western Carolina): Shot 69% from the field and grabbed 7.6 rebounds per game last season in 20.3 minutes.
  • Malachi Brown (Western Carolina): Averaged 12.2 points and hit 36.5% from three across 31 starts at Georgia State last season.
  • Isaiah Manning (Western Carolina): Scored 10.7 points per game off the bench at Sam Houston last season with an 86.8% free-throw mark.
  • Travelle Bryson (Western Carolina): Averaged 8.8 points at Howard last season on a 23.5% usage rate.
