Valparaiso Beacons vs Purdue Boilermakers prediction: Valparaiso's free-throw habit tests Purdue's thin frontcourt at Mackey

Purdue is a heavy home favorite after a rebuild, and the margin may turn on whether Daniel Jacobsen stays out of foul trouble against a Valpo team that spent its opener at the line.

Quick take
  • Purdue's talent edge should open a gap, but a rebuilt rotation that shot poorly in its opener leaves the margin less certain than the spread suggests.
  • Daniel Jacobsen against Valpo's drives: he scored 22 against Gonzaga before foul trouble pushed Raleigh Burgess into the middle.
  • Purdue moved from -18.5 to -19.5 while the total held at 146.5. Both teams went under in their openers.

The whistle and the big man

Purdue's first game told a familiar story about its new frontcourt. Daniel Jacobsen was the best player on the floor against No. 15 Gonzaga, scoring 22 points on 81.8% shooting. Then he picked up fouls, junior Raleigh Burgess took over at center, and a 78-72 loss followed. Analysts afterward pointed to backup center as the roster's biggest worry.

Valparaiso is built to test that weakness. In its opener the Beacons posted a free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) of 86.0%, third in Division I. Purdue's defense allowed a rate of 64.2%, which ranks 344th. One game is a small sample on both sides, and Valpo's line came against a weak opponent. Last season's 38.3% rate (85th) is a steadier baseline. Still, every whistle on Jacobsen moves Purdue closer to a lineup it has not shown it trusts.

Valpo does leave points behind once it gets there. The Beacons made 65.1% of their free throws in the opener, which ranks 230th.

Purdue still looking for shooters

Last season Purdue had the second-best adjusted offense in the country, scoring 132.9 points per 100 possessions after adjusting for opponents. Most of the players behind that offense are gone. Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, Trey Kaufman-Renn and Oscar Cluff have all left, and the current roster played only 41.2% of last season's minutes.

The drop-off showed in the opener. Purdue made 23.8% of its threes, 308th nationally, a year after ranking 14th at 38.3%. Omer Mayer, who won the point guard job, went 1-of-6 from deep. C.J. Cox was the best returning shooter last season at 37.3%, and he started the opener alongside Mayer, Caden Pierce, Jacobsen and Gicarri Harris. Enzo Shahrvin, cleared by the NCAA in October, came off the bench for eight minutes and committed four turnovers. If Purdue's guards find their range against a mid-major defense, the game can get away from Valpo early.

A new Valpo cast

Valparaiso is rebuilding too, though from a lower starting point. The Beacons return 47.4% of last season's minutes and lost their two best shooters, Owen Dease and Brody Whitaker. Transfers Bruno Alocen (Indiana State) and Kai Yu (Bradley) are the portal additions.

The opener gave a first look at the new rotation. JT Pettigrew scored 18 and used the most possessions among the regulars. Freshman Rajan Roberts added 13 off the bench, and Carter Hopoi posted 8 points and 8 rebounds. That 80-58 win over Western Illinois came against the 364th-ranked team in adjusted net rating, so it says little about how Valpo will handle a Big Ten roster. Last season's team made 46.6% of its twos, 349th nationally, which explains why getting to the line matters so much for this offense.

Where the number sits

Purdue is favored by 19.5 after our feed first saw it at 18.5. The total has not moved off 146.5. Both teams went under in their openers. Valpo covered as an 18.5-point favorite, while Purdue lost outright as a 5.5-point underdog.

The gap between the programs is real. Purdue finished last season eighth in adjusted net efficiency, while Valpo ranked 163rd. Valparaiso is 1-17 all-time against Purdue and has lost 12 straight in the series. The Beacons were picked fifth in the Missouri Valley, while Purdue sits 24th in the Coaches Poll. Both teams come in on four days of rest. Tip is 6:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.
