UConn Huskies vs Michigan Wolverines prediction: Michigan's rebuilt champions open as underdogs in UConn title rematch
Seven months after a national title, Michigan brings a new coach and a mostly new roster to Boston, and the market now trusts UConn's continuity more.
| Spread | UConn -7.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 143 |
- UConn's size and rebounding should control the glass. Michigan needs its guards to find a perimeter touch that disappeared in the opener.
- Michigan's frontcourt of J.P. Estrella and a returning Moustapha Thiam against Na'jai Hines and the UConn bigs on the boards.
- UConn is favored by 7.5, up from 5.5 when our feed first saw the game. Michigan returns only 36.0% of last season's minutes.
The champions start over
Michigan beat UConn 69-63 for the national title in April, then lost almost everything that won it. Yaxel Lendeborg, Morez Johnson Jr., Aday Mara and Nimari Burnett are gone, and so is Dusty May, who left to coach the Dallas Mavericks. Mike Boynton Jr. was promoted and won his debut 84-68 over Oakland on Nov. 2.
The roster on the floor returns just 36.0% of last season's minutes. That is why last season's ratings, which had Michigan 1st in the country in adjusted net efficiency (points scored minus allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), say little about this group. UConn kept more: 47.3% of its minutes are back, including Silas Demary Jr. and Braylon Mullins, and Dan Hurley added transfers Nik Khamenia from Duke and Na'jai Hines from Seton Hall. Solo Ball's status is unsettled. One recent report says he is out for the season after wrist surgery, while an October report said he might play later in the year.
Who controls the glass
The clearest early split is rebounding. Michigan secured only 55.3% of Oakland's misses, 341st of 360 teams. UConn grabbed 90.2% of Gardner-Webb's misses, 6th nationally. UConn also has the bigger lineup, with an average height of 79.0 inches weighted by minutes against Michigan's 77.8.
Hines is the new anchor. He was listed at center in this week's projected lineups and had 12 rebounds and 3 blocks in the opener. Michigan's answer was Estrella, who posted 15 points and 12 rebounds against Oakland. The Wolverines played that game without Thiam, who missed it with an illness. Boynton said the expectation is that the Cincinnati transfer plays Friday. If he does, Michigan gets its projected starting five together for the first time.
Michigan's missing jumper
Michigan made just 20.6% of its threes against Oakland, 331st nationally. Elliot Cadeau and Oscar Goodman went a combined 0-for-9 from deep. That is far below the team identity of last season, when Michigan shot 36.7% from three (34th), but most of those shooters left.
Trey McKenney is the steadiest returner. He hit 3 of 6 in the opener and shot 39.1% from three last season. Roddy Gayle Jr. scored 17 while starting at small forward, though his eligibility rests on a court order. He was described as eligible for now as of Oct. 23, and the NCAA could still appeal.
On the other side, Mullins scored 20 on 4-of-9 shooting from three in his return. He says his body feels good but expects to manage the injury all season.
Tempo and the number
UConn played at one of the slowest paces in the country last season: 63.5 possessions per 40 minutes, 353rd of 365. Michigan ran at 70.4 last season, and Boynton's group has not yet shown whether it keeps that pace. A UConn-controlled game drags the possession count down.
The market has leaned that way. The total sits at 144.5, down from 146.5, and both openers went under. Both teams also failed to cover huge spreads in their openers, so neither ATS mark says much. The spread has moved two points toward UConn since our feed first saw it, putting the Huskies at -310 on the moneyline. UConn's one soft spot: it shot 62.5% at the foul line in its opener, which matters if a favorite needs to close out a game.
