Thomas (ME) vs New Hampshire prediction: New Hampshire's rebuilt rotation gets a tune-up against Division III Thomas

With most of last season's scoring gone, the Wildcats' visit from Thomas is a first look at who carries the offense for Nathan Davis.

Quick take
  • Expect New Hampshire, a Division I program, to control a Division III visitor while sorting out minutes for a heavily turned-over roster.
  • Watch Tyler Bike's shooting: he made 37.5% of his threes last season on a team that shot 30.9%.
  • No spread or total is posted. New Hampshire finished last season 344th of 365 in adjusted net efficiency.

A new cast after 9-21

Nathan Davis enters his fourth year at New Hampshire with a roster that barely resembles the one that went 9-21 last season. Players back from that team account for 43.7% of last season's minutes and only 33.4% of its points. The three leading scorers left: Belal El Shakery (11.4 points) for Oakland, Jack Graham (11.2) for Marist and KiJan Robinson (10.7) for Binghamton.

That makes last season's team numbers a loose guide. The returners are role players. Davide Poser started all 30 games, and John Squire was the most efficient of the group. Transfers Erik Oliver-Bush (Manhattan) and Drew McKenna (Old Dominion) arrive to add depth on the wing and in the frontcourt. One preseason ranking slotted the Wildcats ninth in the America East and 351st nationally.

Shooting is the question

Last season's offense was the problem. New Hampshire finished 355th of 365 in adjusted offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) at 94.6. It still fired away from deep, ranking 100th in 3-point attempt rate, but made just 30.9% of those threes, 328th nationally.

The Wildcats did one thing well: they finished possessions on defense, ranking 25th in defensive rebound rate. Against a smaller Division III roster, that edge on the glass should hold. Bike is the returner most likely to fix the spacing.

Setting and schedule

Thomas, a Division III program from Maine, lists this as a Division I exhibition. The Terriers' visits to Division I gyms last season ended in losses to Dartmouth (77-48) and Boston University (113-75). Thomas has a new-look staff under head coach Marquis Mason-Pollard.

The tip time is unsettled: both schools list 6:00 PM ET, while ESPN shows noon. New Hampshire opens Nov. 2 at Brown and hosts Sacred Heart on Nov. 8 before this game, so the Wildcats should have a couple of real results behind them by tipoff.

Key players

  • Tyler Bike (New Hampshire): The best shooter among the returners, he made 37.5% of his threes and scored 7.5 points per game last season.
  • Davide Poser (New Hampshire): Started all 30 games last season, averaging 7.0 points in 28.5 minutes.
  • John Squire (New Hampshire): Posted a 60 effective field goal percentage and 5.7 rebounds per game last season.
  • Drew McKenna (New Hampshire): Carried a 20.9% usage rate in 11.0 minutes per game at Old Dominion last season.

Numbers that matter
