Texas A&M-CC Islanders vs Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns prediction: Islanders' turnover problem faces a careful Louisiana backcourt in Lafayette
Two rebuilt teams coming off double-digit losses, and the one that keeps the ball longer probably wins a slow, low-scoring night at the Cajundome.
| Spread | Louisiana -3.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 129.5 |
- Expect a grinding, low-possession game where Louisiana's ball security offsets its ugly interior shooting, and Texas A&M-CC must cut its giveaways to steal it.
- Jamyron Keller's high-usage scoring against an Islanders defense rebuilt almost from scratch.
- Louisiana is favored by 2.25 with a 134.5 total, unchanged all day; the Islanders' pace ranked 352nd in their opener.
The possession battle
Both teams lost on Monday by double digits, and both are playing with mostly new rosters. That makes Friday's game less about who these programs were last season and more about which flaw from opening night carries over. The clearest gap is in ball security.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi committed 15 turnovers in a 67-55 loss at Texas State. Its turnover rate (giveaways per 100 possessions) was 24.6%, which ranks 329th nationally after one game. Louisiana sat at the other end against Akron, turning it over on just 10.6% of possessions, 20th in the country. The Cajuns also forced turnovers at a 24.2% clip, 77th.
In a game this slow, every wasted trip matters. If the Islanders give the ball away at Monday's rate again, Louisiana gets the extra shots it needs to cover for its own offense.
Louisiana's missing middle
The Cajuns need those extra shots, because their opener was hard to watch inside the arc. Louisiana made 25.7% of its two-pointers against Akron, the worst mark among 360 Division I teams. Its effective field goal percentage, which counts threes 1.5 times, was 35.7%, 342nd.
The scoring was also concentrated. Three players produced 55 of Louisiana's 61 points, led by Keller's 26. Keller carried a 35.8% usage rate and needed 13 threes to get there, making four.
The Islanders weren't sharp either. They shot 3-for-17 from deep in San Marcos, and their 17.6% three-point mark ranks 343rd. Desmond Kent Jr. was the exception, scoring 13 on 6-of-8 shooting off the bench, and the Islanders' reserves outscored Texas State's 37-15.
Strangers in both locker rooms
Last season's numbers are a weak guide here. Texas A&M-CC returns just 15.1% of last season's minutes, and Louisiana returns 29.6%. The Islanders' defense ranked 18th nationally in efficiency last season, but almost none of the players behind that number are back.
The Islanders were still picked third in the Southland preseason coaches poll, betting on a newcomer class that includes Sebastian Robinson, who averaged 14.8 points at NJIT last season. Louisiana, in its second season under Quannas White, went 11-22 last year and rebuilt around transfers such as Trent Middleton Jr. and Dani Pounds.
Schedule strength matters in reading Monday. Akron's adjusted net rating ranks 61st, and the Cajuns trailed 46-29 at halftime. Texas State ranks 255th, a much softer test for the Islanders.
A slow game and a short number
Texas A&M-CC played at 61.5 possessions per 40 minutes in its opener, 352nd in pace, and Louisiana's 66 possessions ranked 317th. Two slow teams with shaky shooting explain a total of 134.5. Both openers went under their closing totals.
Louisiana is a 2.25-point favorite at home, and neither the spread nor the total has moved since our feed first saw the game Friday morning. The Cajuns are 2-0 all-time against the Islanders. Both teams failed to cover Monday, Louisiana as a 5.5-point underdog to Akron.
No injury or availability news has surfaced for either team.
What to watch - Islanders' turnovers in the first 10 minutes - Whether Louisiana finds any rhythm at the rim - Keller's shot volume against a new Islanders defense
