Stephen F. Austin vs Abilene Christian prediction: Abilene Christian's turnover hunt tests Stephen F. Austin's rebuilt backcourt

Both programs return less than a quarter of last season's minutes, so the question is whether ACU's steal-first identity outlasts its own roster churn against a Lumberjacks team built on ball security.

Quick take
  • Expect a grind: SFA wants a slow, clean game, while ACU needs live-ball turnovers to manufacture offense it struggled to create last season.
  • ACU's ball pressure against MJ Russell and Narit Chotikavanic, the Lumberjacks' new primary handlers after losing Keon Thompson.
  • No line is posted yet; last season's final adjusted net ratings put SFA 90th and ACU 253rd nationally.

Pressure against poise

Abilene Christian's defense ran on one idea last season: take the ball away. The Wildcats forced turnovers on 23.6% of opponent possessions, third-best in Division I, and ranked fifth in steal rate. Everything else about that defense was a problem. Opponents shot 39.4% from three against ACU, 364th of 365.

Stephen F. Austin was the opposite kind of team. The Lumberjacks turned it over on just 14.0% of possessions, 20th nationally, and held opponents to 29.9% from deep, 11th in the country. That defense helped carry them to a 28-6 season and an NCAA Tournament trip that ended 89-84 in overtime against Tulsa, a loss for SFA.

The catch is who handles the ball now. Keon Thompson, who scored 18.5 points a game with a usage rate of 32.2%, is gone. SFA's ball security this year rests on newcomers and a bench shooter stepping into a bigger role, and an early-November road game against a pressing identity is a real test of that.
