Southern Miss Golden Eagles vs Iowa State Cyclones prediction: Iowa State's pressure faces a rebuilt Southern Miss in its home opener

After a rare season-opening loss, the Cyclones return to Hilton Coliseum needing their guards to make shots and their defense to take the ball from a backcourt that has barely played together.

Quick take
  • Iowa State should control this at home; the margin depends on how many live-ball turnovers it creates and whether its guards shoot better than in the opener.
  • Tamin Lipsey and Iowa State's ball pressure against Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt and a Southern Miss backcourt built almost entirely from newcomers.
  • Iowa State is favored by 30.5, up from 30.0 when our feed first saw the game, four days after the Cyclones failed to cover against Memphis.

Back home after a stumble

Iowa State had not lost a season opener since 2017. Memphis ended that streak Monday, beating the No. 18 Cyclones 80-76 at the Sanford Pentagon, a game Iowa State closed favored by 15.25 points.

Friday's home opener in Ames offers a reset. Southern Miss is on a guaranteed-money trip, one of two buy games on its schedule, and the Golden Eagles arrive having played only an NAIA opponent. The question is not really who wins. It is whether Iowa State looks like the team the Big 12 coaches picked fourth, or the one that scuffled against Memphis.

Pressure against loose handles

The clearest edge on the board comes from last season. Iowa State forced turnovers on 22.7% of opponent possessions, 5th nationally, while Southern Miss gave the ball away on 19.1% of its own trips, 324th.

Both rosters have changed, so treat that as a starting point. The Cyclone pressure, though, still has its engine: Lipsey averaged 2.3 steals last season, and Bradley transfer Jaquan Johnson averaged 2.5. Southern Miss, meanwhile, turned it over on 23.1% of possessions even against Tougaloo. Gaines-Wyatt, the Hampton transfer at point guard, handed out five assists in the opener and will carry the burden of breaking pressure. If Iowa State turns steals into runouts, a big margin becomes realistic.

The shooting question in Ames

Iowa State made just 20.0% of its threes against Memphis. Lipsey went 1-of-7 from deep and Jamarion Batemon finished 0-for-6 from the field. The departure of Milan Momcilovic, a 48.4% three-point shooter last season who is now at Kentucky, leaves a real hole in the spacing.

Ryan Prather Jr. was the bright spot. Back from sports hernia surgery, the Robert Morris transfer scored 19 off the bench on 3-of-6 from three. Otzelberger opened with a three-guard lineup of Lipsey, Johnson and Batemon, then hinted that Leon Bond III and Taj Manning could see bigger roles. No starting five for Friday had been confirmed. Killyan Toure, a returning starter, is out, with no reason or timeline given.

Lipsey is available. His eligibility was cleared by a court injunction, and the school expects him to run the offense in his fifth season.

Southern Miss starts over

Jay Ladner is rebuilding almost from scratch. Players on this roster account for just 15.1% of last season's minutes, so last year's team numbers say little about this group. Leading scorer Tylik Weeks left for Memphis, the team that just beat Iowa State.

The constant is Isaac Taveras, Blue Ribbon's Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year. He averaged 15.3 points last season and opened this one with 12 points and nine rebounds. Cameron Wallace, a 6-9 transfer forward, added 11 points off the bench. Ladner moved to a one-big starting lineup for the opener after using two bigs in exhibitions, and that choice matters against an Iowa State frontcourt led by Tre Singleton, who pulled down 11 rebounds against Memphis.

Where the number sits

The spread has drifted toward Iowa State, from 30.0 to 30.5, and the total has risen from 149 to 150.5. A line that large rests on the gap between the programs: last season Iowa State finished 7th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), while Southern Miss ranked 221st.

Free throws could shape the margin. Iowa State lived at the line against Memphis, with a free throw rate (attempts per field goal attempt) of 55.2%, 39th nationally, but made only 68.8% of its attempts. Cleaner shooting from the stripe would help a favorite trying to win by more than 30.
