Southern Jaguars vs TCU Horned Frogs prediction: TCU's ball hawks test Southern's brand-new, turnover-prone backcourt

Southern rebuilt nearly its entire roster, and its debut showed a team that steals, fouls and gives the ball away at high rates, a combination TCU is built to punish.

Quick take
  • TCU should control this at home by winning the possession battle and the free-throw battle against a Southern roster still learning to play together.
  • Southern's ball handlers, led by Daniel Dormu, against a TCU defense that forced turnovers on 26.7% of Lindenwood's possessions.
  • TCU moved from -23.5 to -26.5 in our feed; Southern covered as a 25.5-point underdog at SMU despite a 24.3% turnover rate.

A roster built from scratch

Southern arrives in Fort Worth as close to a brand-new team as Division I gets. Players on this roster accounted for just 1.4% of last season's minutes, and Kevin Johnson, in his fourth season as head coach, has two returnees to go with 14 newcomers. Whatever last season's Jaguars did is a weak guide to what tips off tonight.

The debut was respectable. Southern was in a tight game with SMU at halftime before losing 85-72 on the road, against an opponent ranked 41st in adjusted net efficiency (points scored minus allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). The second half is where the newcomers came apart, and that's the version TCU will try to bring out.

Turnovers in both directions

Southern played that SMU game at both ends of the turnover spectrum. It gave the ball away on 24.3% of its possessions (turnover rate), 324th of 360 teams. It also took the ball away constantly: its steal rate of 23.0% ranks fifth nationally.

That chaos runs straight into a TCU defense with quick hands of its own. The Frogs forced turnovers on 26.7% of Lindenwood's possessions, 51st nationally, and West Virginia transfer DJ Thomas collected five steals in 28 minutes. Southern can survive a few live-ball mistakes against a mid-major. Against a Big 12 team that runs out after them, every one becomes two points the other way.

The whistle could decide the margin

The loudest number in Southern's opener is its fouling. SMU earned a free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 88.9%, 359th of 360. Last season's Southern team also sent opponents to the line often, but that was a different roster, so treat this as one alarming night rather than an identity.

TCU wants to live there. The Frogs posted a free throw rate of 59.4% against Lindenwood, 30th nationally, while attempting relatively few threes. The one wrinkle: starting big men Luke Bamgboye and Xavier Edmonds both battled foul trouble in the opener, so TCU's frontcourt depth could get tested if the whistle runs tight at both ends.

Fast starts and a coaching milestone

TCU's opener was a 98-59 rout, and the damage came early: the Frogs scored 57 first-half points, 13th nationally. Micah Robinson and Thomas each scored 19, and the scoring spread across a roster that returns about half of last season's minutes alongside transfers from Texas Tech, West Virginia and Long Beach State.

That win was Jamie Dixon's 200th at TCU in his 11th season, leaving him five victories shy of Buster Brannon's school record. Dixon has talked openly about a Final Four, and a schedule with seven preseason Top 25 opponents is ahead. Lindenwood ranked 261st in adjusted net efficiency, though, so the opener says more about TCU's ceiling than its floor.

Where the number sits

TCU is favored by 26.5, up from 23.5 when our feed first saw the game. The total hasn't budged from 152.5. Both teams covered in their openers: TCU laid 29.5 and won by 39, while Southern got 25.5 at SMU and lost by 13, with the game staying under.

The last meeting, in 2023, went to TCU 108-75. With a bench full of newcomers, Southern's cover hinges on whether its turnovers stay manageable once TCU's pressure stretches into the second half.
