Queens University Royals vs Oklahoma St Cowboys prediction: Queens brings its shootout habit to Stillwater as a 19.5-point underdog

The Royals can score with Oklahoma State; what decides this number is whether Queens can get stops, and hold onto the ball against a Cowboys defense built to take it.

Quick take
  • Expect a fast, high-scoring night: Queens should score, but its defense has given up points to everyone and Oklahoma State has more bodies.
  • Oklahoma State's ball pressure against Jordan Watford, who handles the Royals' biggest offensive load and has protected the ball so far.
  • Oklahoma State is a 19.5-point favorite with a 174.5 total and no movement; Queens is 2-0 against the spread and to the over.

The Royals score and give it back

Last March, Queens won its first ASUN tournament title in its first postseason-eligible Division I season, then ran into Purdue in the NCAA first round. The Royals have opened this season the way they finished that run: scoring in bunches and defending almost nobody.

They beat Winthrop 103-98 on a neutral floor, then won 96-95 at Loyola Marymount as a 6.5-point underdog. The offense is genuine. Queens owns an effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times) of 63.3%, 44th nationally. It ranked 16th in the same stat last season, so this isn't a two-game mirage.

The defense is the problem. Opponents are hitting 45.3% of their threes, 343rd of 360 teams. Last season's final adjusted defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) ranked 333rd of 365, and returning players won't fix that overnight. Oklahoma State, meanwhile, led Incarnate Word by 37 at halftime of its opener and won 91-60.

Pressure on Watford's hands

The cleanest clash is turnovers. Oklahoma State forced turnovers on 29.6% of Incarnate Word's possessions, 18th nationally. Jacob Walker, a Sam Houston transfer, had four steals to go with eight assists in that game.

Queens has been careful so far, giving the ball away on 12.5% of its possessions, 49th nationally. Much of that rests on Jordan Watford, whose usage rate of 30.5% is the highest among the Royals' regulars. He scored 26 with eight assists against Winthrop. If the Cowboys speed him up and turn empty trips into run-outs, a 19.5-point gap stops looking large.

Queens' shooters are gone

Last season Queens lived behind the arc, ranking 36th in 3-point attempt rate. Three of the shooters who powered that are elsewhere now: Carson Schwieger at Tulane, Maban Jabriel at Maryland and Yoav Berman at Duquesne. This season the Royals rank 320th in attempt rate and do their damage inside, making 64.0% of their twos.

That inside game now faces a front line that blocked 18.8% of Incarnate Word's two-point tries, 42nd nationally. The exception to the new profile is Nasir Mann, who is 8 of 12 from three and scored 28 at Loyola Marymount.

The glass tilts toward the home team. Queens grabs only 61.8% of opponents' misses, 302nd, and was 328th last season. Oklahoma State rebounded 39.5% of its own misses in the opener, and second chances are how a favorite pulls away from a team that can't otherwise get stops.

Rebuilt rosters, short rest

Both teams are new. Queens returns 40.0% of last season's minutes and Oklahoma State 32.1%, so last season's team numbers are a loose guide for both. Steve Lutz, in his third season, rebuilt through the portal with Jordan Burks (UCF), Kashie Natt and Walker (Sam Houston), Luka Bogavac (North Carolina) and Julius Halaifonua (Georgetown). Burks, who missed the Oct. 11 exhibition loss to New Mexico, scored 11 in the opener.

Availability is murky at guard. Kanye Clary, the Cowboys' top returning guard, was listed questionable with a groin injury as of Nov. 2; Lutz called him day-to-day and said he would not rush him. Natt and freshman Anthony Felesi both started the opener. Lutz said around Oct. 30 he was hopeful Bogavac would be back for the opener, but his status since hasn't been confirmed. Parsa Fallah is eligible under a temporary restraining order and cleared to practice, but he still needs medical clearance and has said he hopes to return in December.

The schedule favors the hosts. Oklahoma State comes in on four days of rest. Queens gets two after a one-point road win in Los Angeles, then a trip to Stillwater.
