Northern Kentucky Norse vs Texas A&M Aggies prediction: Texas A&M's turnover machine tests Northern Kentucky's brand-new backcourt
The Norse have scored freely against two weak opponents, but an Aggies defense that forced 25 turnovers in its opener is a different kind of problem at Reed Arena.
| Spread | Texas A&M -27 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 171.25 |
- Texas A&M's pressure should pile up live-ball turnovers early, and a fast game could turn lopsided before halftime unless Northern Kentucky protects the ball.
- Eric Acker, a La Salle transfer averaging 8.5 assists, against an Aggies defense ranked 14th in forced turnover rate.
- Texas A&M is a 26.5-point favorite, up from 25.25, and the total rose to 171. Northern Kentucky has gone over in both games.
Pressure on unfamiliar hands
Bucky McMillan's second Aggies team opened by forcing 25 turnovers against Alabama State. Texas A&M forced 25 turnovers in a 97-66 rout of Alabama State on Tuesday, and its forced turnover rate (opponent turnovers per 100 possessions) sits at 30.5%, 14th in the country.
Northern Kentucky arrives with a backcourt that has barely played together. Only 23.8% of last season's minutes returned, and Darrin Horn started four transfers alongside returnee Ethan Elliott in the preseason exhibition. The Norse have been loose with the ball, turning it over on 18.7% of possessions, 214th nationally. Their two wins came against UTEP and South Dakota, teams ranked 266th and 287th in adjusted net efficiency. Neither pressed like this.
The key figure is Eric Acker. The La Salle transfer is averaging 8.5 assists in 37 minutes a night. If he can break the first wave of pressure, Northern Kentucky has scorers to finish possessions. If he can't, the Aggies will score in transition without ever running a set.
Pagotto against a wall at the rim
Northern Kentucky's offense has lived inside the arc. The Norse are making 66.2% of their twos, 41st nationally, and Noah Pagotto is the reason. The East Texas A&M transfer is shooting 76.2% from the floor, and he dropped 30 on 11-of-15 shooting at South Dakota on Wednesday.
Texas A&M held Alabama State to 32.6% on two-pointers, 28th in the country. That came against a weak opponent, and it was one game. Still, it is the clearest clash in the matchup. Freshman Willie Foster, who scored 24 in his debut and is averaging 23, gives the Norse a second option who can create his own shot. If the paint closes, though, Northern Kentucky has to win from outside, and the Aggies will happily give up that trade.
Free throws and a fast clock
Both teams get to the line a lot, but only one makes its free throws. Texas A&M's free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) is 77.4%, fourth nationally. The Aggies made just 60.4% of those attempts, 287th, and Jalen Shelley went 45.5% at the line in his double-double debut.
Northern Kentucky also draws fouls, ranking 24th in free throw rate, and it converts at 81.5%. With a spread this big, that matters less for the result than for the margin late, when the Norse can trade free throws for points against the spread.
Tempo adds to the scoring. Texas A&M averaged 82 possessions per 40 minutes in the opener, 17th nationally, and Northern Kentucky is at 75.3. The Norse defense has given up 112.6 points per 100 possessions, 267th. That is how a total climbs to 171.
Where the number sits
The line has moved toward Texas A&M since our feed first recorded it, from -25.25 to -26.5. The total jumped from 167.25 to 171. Northern Kentucky has covered and gone over in both games so far. Texas A&M failed to cover -32.5 against Alabama State and finished under 163.25 after a 44-29 halftime lead.
Last season's final adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had Texas A&M 44th in net efficiency and Northern Kentucky 172nd. Those numbers say little about either team now. The Aggies return just 14.1% of last season's minutes, and Kansas State transfer PJ Haggerty and Texas transfer Jordan Pope combined for 39 points in the opener.
One availability note: Zach Clemence had foot surgery in the offseason and was expected back to full action in July, but Texas A&M hasn't publicly updated his status since. Mackenzie Mgbako, who was recovering from a foot injury in June, played 22 minutes in the opener.
