North Florida vs California Baptist prediction: North Florida's three-point barrage runs into Cal Baptist's perimeter wall
The Ospreys built last season around the three, and Cal Baptist's defense was built to take it away, under a coach now inheriting that blueprint.
- Last season's profiles favor Cal Baptist controlling a slower game, but both sidelines and rosters have changed, so treat those numbers loosely.
- North Florida's three-heavy attack against a Lancers defense that held opponents to 29.6% from deep last season, fifth nationally.
- No line yet. Cal Baptist allowed 67.6 points per game last season (35th), the number most likely to shape any total.
Threes against a wall
North Florida plays basketball one way: from behind the arc. Last season more than half of its shots were threes, a 51.1% attempt rate that ranked 9th in Division I. The Ospreys made enough of them, hitting 35.1% from deep, to post a respectable offense despite a 7-25 record.
Cal Baptist's defense was built to erase that kind of team. Lancers opponents took threes on just 31.7% of their shots last season, ranking 357th, which means almost nobody let fewer attempts happen. When opponents did fire, they made 29.6%, fifth-best in the country. That run-out-the-shooters approach helped Cal Baptist go 25-9 and reach its first NCAA Tournament.
If North Florida can't get clean looks from outside, it has little else to lean on. The Ospreys rarely got to the line, with a free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) that ranked 331st. Their 77.4% free-throw shooting ranked 23rd, but that skill only matters if they draw contact.
The glass tilts to Riverside
Cal Baptist's offense was rarely pretty last season. Its effective field goal percentage, which counts threes as 1.5 makes, sat at 48.3%, 324th nationally. The Lancers compensated by chasing their own misses, grabbing 37.4% of available offensive rebounds, 15th in the country.
That is the weakest spot on North Florida's floor. The Ospreys secured only 62.9% of opponents' misses, ranking 362nd. Add a block rate that ranked dead last at 365th, and second chances near the rim look like the Lancers' clearest path to points. Cal Baptist added 6-10 center Nick Richart from Charlotte, a body that fits this exact plan.
A tug-of-war over tempo
These teams want very different games. North Florida averaged 71.8 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 20th fastest. Cal Baptist played at 65.3, ranking 295th.
Pace matters because North Florida's defense struggled to stop anyone once possessions piled up. Its adjusted defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) finished at 124.5, 362nd of 365. The Ospreys gave up 88.2 points per game. A fast game gives Cal Baptist's modest offense more chances to find that defense; a slow one lets the Lancers' defense dictate.
New coaches, old numbers
Every number above comes from last season, and both programs look different now. Rick Croy, the former head coach, left in April to become associate head coach at Arizona State. Kyle Getter, a longtime assistant who spent three seasons at Notre Dame, takes his first head coaching job. The Lancers' last game was a 68-60 first-round loss at Kansas, and Dominique Daniels Jr., whose late three won the WAC final, was a graduate guard on that team.
This is also Cal Baptist's first season in the Big West after leaving the WAC. Lipscomb transfer Ethan Duncan joins Richart as a newcomer with one year left.
North Florida's picture is murkier. Bobby Kennen is expected to be North Florida's interim head coach, in his first season. The Ospreys added Elijah Elliott, Eddie Placer, Ethan Bergantino and Temple transfer Ayuba Bryant Jr., plus junior Hedrens Bartelus. Their season ended with a 93-85 loss to West Georgia in the ASUN tournament. No injury or eligibility news has surfaced for either team.
Last season's adjusted net ratings put Cal Baptist 106th and North Florida 331st. That gap is wide, but with new coaches and new rosters, the opening week will say more than any carryover number.
