Northeastern Huskies vs Virginia Cavaliers prediction: Virginia's ball-hawking guards test Northeastern's rebuilt backcourt in Charlottesville

The Cavaliers turned their opener into a steal-fest, and a Northeastern roster that returns about a third of its minutes now has to protect the ball against a 34.5-point spread.

Quick take
  • Virginia should build its lead early through steals and easy twos; the open question is whether Northeastern's scorers keep the margin inside a very large number.
  • Rashad King against Virginia's perimeter pressure: he scored 21 at Boston University on a 31.3% usage rate and will carry a heavy load again.
  • Virginia moved from -31 to -34.5 and the total from 158.75 to 160.5; the Cavaliers failed to cover -31.75 against Drexel.

Pressure on a new backcourt

Ryan Odom's second Virginia team opened with a defense that lived in passing lanes. The Cavaliers' steal rate against Drexel (steals per opponent possession) was 24.0%, third of 360 Division I teams, and their forced turnover rate ranked 36th. That is a sharp turn from last season, when Virginia's forced turnover rate ranked 284th and its defense won by contesting shots rather than taking the ball.

Northeastern arrives with a guard-heavy group that has played one game together. The Huskies were reasonably secure at Boston University, with a turnover rate (giveaways per 100 possessions) that ranked 126th. But their assist rate ranked 345th, a sign of an offense built on individual creation. Against a defense jumping every handoff, isolation can turn into live-ball turnovers and runouts quickly.

Virginia's own ball security is the counterweight. Chance Mallory, the point guard who missed an exhibition in September with a minor injury, collected four steals against Drexel but was also charged with six turnovers.

No resistance inside the arc

If Virginia doesn't get its points off steals, it should find them near the rim. Boston University made 65.0% of its twos against Northeastern, 336th nationally. That was no one-night fluke: last season the Huskies allowed 57.8% on twos, 359th of 365, on the way to a 7-24 record.

The glass offers little relief. Northeastern grabbed only 60.0% of BU's misses in the opener, 316th. Thijs De Ridder, the forward who returns as Virginia's leading scorer from last season, went 9-of-15 for 24 points with nine rebounds against Drexel. Johann Grunloh, who averaged 2.2 blocks last season, added 11 points and nine boards. Northeastern's leaders are guards, and that size gap shows up wherever the ball goes into the post.

A faster Virginia, a bigger total

Last season Virginia played slowly, ranking 261st in pace (possessions per 40 minutes). The opener moved at 75.5 possessions, 86th, and the Cavaliers led Drexel 51-27 at halftime. Northeastern's game at Boston University ran at 72.5, and the Huskies gave up 46 first-half points there.

More possessions mean more chances for a turnover-forcing team to stretch a lead, and they also lift the total. The market has followed: 160.5 is well above the 142.75 that closed for Virginia's opener, which still went over.

Depth, continuity and the number

Northeastern returns 34.0% of last season's minutes, so last year's team numbers say little about this group. The newcomers carried the opener. King, a senior who spent last season at LSU, scored a game-high 21. High Point transfer Dorian Grosber added 18, and Loyola transfer Brayden Young scored 13 off the bench. The Huskies led 78-77 with 5:09 to play before BU closed the game on them. Bill Coen, in his 20th season, is the winningest coach in CAA and Northeastern history.

Virginia, No. 9 in the AP poll, is deep enough that an 11-man rotation is possible. Christian Harmon, the Arkansas State transfer, played six minutes in the opener while working back from a foot injury. Elijah Gertrude, healthy after the knee injury that cost him his sophomore year, has worked his way into the rotation.

The last meeting, in December 2023, ended Virginia 56, Northeastern 54. Nobody expects that margin here. The spread has moved from -31 to -34.5 toward Virginia since our feed first saw it, and a deep bench that keeps pressing late is how a favorite this large covers. Northeastern's late-game shooting in the opener isn't in the data, but its scorers showed they can keep a game close for 35 minutes.
