North Carolina A&T vs East Carolina prediction: East Carolina's rebuilt Pirates test Brycen Blaine against a remade A&T

Both programs return little from last season, so this early-November game turns on new transfers and on whether North Carolina A&T's free-throw habit survived its roster overhaul.

Quick take
  • Two nearly new rosters, so expect a feeling-out game where transfer guards carry the scoring and the home floor gives East Carolina a lift.
  • Brycen Blaine's volume scoring against an A&T defense that allowed 36.4% from three last season, 339th nationally.
  • No spread or total posted yet. Last season ECU ranked 259th and A&T 274th in adjusted net efficiency, a weak guide after heavy turnover.

Two rosters built from scratch

Almost nothing from last winter will be on the floor in Greenville. East Carolina returns 6.8% of last season's minutes, and North Carolina A&T returns 13.0%. The usual reference points, last season's efficiency numbers and records, describe teams that no longer exist.

The Pirates lost Jordan Riley, who scored 23.6 points per game last season while running nearly everything. The Aggies lost Lewis Walker, an 18.9-point scorer now at UCF. Mike Schwartz, in his fifth year at ECU, and Monté Ross, in his fourth at A&T, have spent the offseason assembling new rotations from the transfer portal.

That makes last season's ratings a rough baseline at best. Adjusted efficiency measures points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents. On that scale ECU finished 259th and A&T 274th, which put the two programs in the same tier. Neither number says much about these new rosters.

Blaine headlines the new Pirates

ECU's offense was the problem last season. The Pirates shot 28.8% from three, 361st of 365 teams, and their effective field goal percentage (which counts threes as 1.5 makes) ranked 353rd.

The portal haul is aimed at that weakness. Brycen Blaine arrives from Charleston Southern after averaging 17.2 points with a 31.4% usage rate, meaning he finished nearly a third of his team's possessions while on the floor. Cian Medley brings a playmaker's profile from Kent State, where he averaged 6.4 assists. Kaseem Watson hit 38.2% of his threes at UTEP and gives the Pirates a floor-spacer they badly lacked.

The matchup suits them. A&T's defense allowed 36.4% from three last season, 339th nationally. Even with a new roster, the Aggies' perimeter defense is the biggest question this game will answer early.

A&T's trip to the line

The Aggies' defining trait last season was drawing fouls. Their free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) was 45.1%, 3rd in the country. That came largely from players who have left, so whether the habit carries over is unknown.

The pieces who remain point inside. Will Felton, the returning center, shot 69.6% from the field last season in a reserve role. Ponce James, a transfer from Delaware State, made 84.7% of his free throws and averaged 13.6 points, so he can turn contact into points. Shane Lancaster adds outside shooting after hitting 41.7% of his threes at Alcorn State.

ECU's defense kept opponents off the line reasonably well last season, ranking 110th in opponent free throw rate. If the Pirates keep the Aggies out of the bonus, A&T will need Lancaster's jumper to keep pace.

Home floor and the last meeting

The game tips at 4 p.m. ET at Minges Coliseum. These programs last played in November 2024, when East Carolina won 93-69 at home.

Both teams play their openers first. ECU hosts USC Upstate on Nov. 2, and A&T faces Warren Wilson on Nov. 3. Those games will give the first real look at these rotations before the market posts a number on this one. No line has been posted yet, and no injury or eligibility news has surfaced for either team.

Numbers that matter

ECU returning minutes6.8%The Pirates bring back almost none of last season's rotation, so their 2025-26 numbers are a weak guide.
A&T returning minutes13.0%The Aggies are nearly as new, after losing leading scorer Lewis Walker to UCF.
A&T free throw rate last season45.1%Ranked 3rd nationally, but most of the players who drew those fouls are gone.
ECU 3-point % last season28.8%Ranked 361st of 365, the weakness ECU's transfer class was built to fix.
A&T opponent 3-point % last season36.4%Ranked 339th, an opening for ECU's new shooters if the defense hasn't improved.
