New Haven Chargers vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights prediction: Brandin Knight's transfer-built Rutgers debuts against a gutted New Haven
Rutgers brings nine newcomers and an interim coach into its opener against a slow, rebuilt Chargers team, and a 24.5-point line asks how quickly the Scarlet Knights find their footing.
| Spread | Rutgers -24.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 138 |
- New Haven will try to slow the game down, but Rutgers' transfer scorers and edge at the line should pull away.
- Teshaun Steele, who scored 18 at Syracuse after averaging 3.9 last season, will face a Rutgers backcourt led by Tariq Francis.
- Rutgers -24.5 and 142.5 haven't moved; New Haven covered +27.5 at Syracuse while playing a 64-possession game.
A new Rutgers, a stand-in coach
Rutgers opens its season tonight with Steve Pikiell still in cancer treatment and away from practice. Associate head coach Brandin Knight will lead the team to open the year. That makes this a debut twice over: a new voice on the bench and a roster with nine newcomers among 16 players.
The Scarlet Knights return 53.3% of last season's minutes, and the core of that is Tariq Francis, who scored 17.0 points a game and made 91.1% of his free throws. The additions carry more scoring. Darin Smith Jr. averaged 20.7 points at Central Connecticut, and Rasheed Jones shot 36.6% from three at Coastal Carolina. Christian Gurdak, a 6-foot-10 center from Virginia Tech, made 63.2% of his shots.
The exhibitions were competitive. Rutgers lost 77-75 to Villanova and then 104-99 to St. John's in four overtimes, a game that ended when Darren Buchanan Jr.'s tying attempt missed. The Big Ten media still picked Rutgers 17th of 18.
Injury questions in the frontcourt
Two newcomers carry question marks. Will Sydnor, the Manhattan transfer projected as a starter, missed most of the offseason with a high ankle sprain. He played about six rusty minutes against St. John's and did not return after halftime. Dorin Buca, the 7-foot-2 Kansas State transfer, missed both exhibitions with what was described as a minor knee injury. Rutgers hasn't said whether either will play tonight, and the forward spot between Buchanan and Sydnor was still being debated in previews earlier this week.
New Haven starts from scratch
New Haven is in its second NEC season of the move to Division I, and Ted Hotaling calls the program a start-up. The Chargers return just 24.1% of last season's minutes after their top three scorers left in the transfer portal, led by Jabri Fitzpatrick, who averaged 15.0 points and is now at Eastern Michigan.
The opener at Syracuse showed both the problem and a reason for hope. New Haven trailed 17-39 at halftime and lost 58-74. Steele went 7 of 11 for 18 points, a big jump for a player who shot 17.1% from three last season. Danny Young Jr. used the most possessions but finished 2 of 10 and missed all six of his threes.
The gap at the foul line
This is where Rutgers can pull away. New Haven's free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 16.7% at Syracuse, 344th nationally, and the Chargers made only 55.6% of their tries. Rutgers drew fouls at a 36.3% rate last season. Francis and Smith, who shot 89.8% at the line last season, are the players most likely to turn contact into points.
Pace, spread and total
The line has not moved since our feed first saw it: Rutgers -24.5, total 142.5. New Haven plays slowly. Its 64 possessions at Syracuse ranked 338th, almost identical to last season's 64.1. That slow pace helped the Chargers cover +27.5 in the Carrier Dome as the total pushed at 132.
Last season's adjusted net ratings (scoring margin per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had Rutgers 139th and New Haven 326th. Both rosters have turned over enough that those ratings are only a rough guide. For the Chargers they are close to meaningless, since three-quarters of last season's minutes are gone.
What to watch
- Whether Sydnor and Buca are in uniform, and how many minutes Gurdak takes at center.
- Steele's shooting: was the Syracuse game a breakout or an outlier?
- Free throw attempts. If the gap at the line is wide, it likely decides the spread.
- New Haven's pace in the first half, which will shape a total set well above the Syracuse number.
