Massachusetts Minutemen vs Boston College Eagles prediction: Abdullah Ahmed's shot-blocking stands between Boston College and the paint

Boston College's rebuilt, undersized guard lineup wants to attack the rim and draw fouls, and UMass opened the season with one of the country's most active shot-blocking defenses.

Quick take
  • Expect a slow, physical game where Boston College's guards drive and draw fouls, and UMass tries to win the glass and the paint.
  • Money Williams driving at Abdullah Ahmed, who blocked seven shots in 17 minutes against Troy.
  • Boston College is favored by 5.5, up from 4.5 when our feed first saw it; UMass shot 53.3% from the line in its opener.

Ahmed against a small backcourt

UMass has won four straight in this series, and last December's 76-74 win came down to Marcus Banks Jr. at the free throw line with 4.6 seconds left. Banks is gone. So is nearly everyone from the Boston College team he beat. What remains is a fresh question at TD Garden: can Luke Murray's guard-heavy roster score inside against a UMass frontcourt that swatted everything in sight in its opener?

UMass blocked 10 shots at Troy, and center Abdullah Ahmed had seven of them. That works out to a block rate (blocks per opponent two-point attempt) of 27.8%, seventh in Division I after one game. Troy made only 41.7% of its twos.

That is a problem for Boston College's style. The Eagles took threes on just 33.3% of their shots against Wagner, 303rd nationally, and lived at the line instead, with a free throw rate (free throws attempted per field goal attempt) of 49.0%, 70th. Murray said this week that his roster lacks "real size" and called it a potential weak spot. Brandon Benjamin, who pulled down 10 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench, is the closest thing he has to an answer at the rim.

The free throw line could swing it

If Boston College keeps driving, UMass has to defend without fouling, and then make its own free throws. That second part has been a problem for a while. The Minutemen made 53.3% of their free throws at Troy, 337th nationally. Last season they shot 67.2%, 343rd, so the opener fits a long-running pattern.

Boston College made 76.0% of its free throws against Wagner. Williams shot 85.5% from the line at Montana last season. In a game the market prices at about two possessions, that gap is the clearest edge either team holds.

Two rosters starting over

Last season's numbers say little about either team. Boston College went 11-20 and brings back none of last season's minutes. Murray, in his first year after Earl Grant's five seasons, brought in 13 new players, 11 of them transfers. The Eagles were picked 17th in the preseason ACC poll.

UMass returns 41.6% of last season's minutes and leans on two transfers. Junjie Wang from San Francisco had 18 points and 13 rebounds at Troy, though it took him 17 shots. Jordan Clayton from Northwestern hit 4 of 10 threes after shooting 41% from deep there last season. The Minutemen will again be without senior forward Jayden Ndjigue, who started every game last season and has been ruled out for Friday with a hand injury. Point guard Danny Carbuccia handed out eight assists at Troy without scoring.

The openers came against different levels of opponent. UMass won 71-60 at Troy as a 2.75-point underdog. Boston College beat Wagner 76-50, but Wagner rated 299th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), while Troy rated 149th.

A slow game and a rising line

Boston College played at 63.5 possessions per 40 minutes against Wagner, 344th nationally, and Murray used only eight players. That slow pace suits a roster built around drives and trips to the line. UMass played a little faster at Troy, but neither team opened in a hurry.

The market has moved toward the Eagles. Boston College opened at -4.5 in our feed and now sits at -5.5, with the moneyline at -245. The total has moved from 144.75 to 145.5. Both teams stayed under their totals in their openers, and both covered.

Numbers that matter

UMass block rate27.8%Seventh in Division I after Ahmed's seven-block opener, and a direct test for a Boston College team that lacks size.
BC free throw rate49.0%Ranks 70th; the Eagles score by attacking the rim and getting fouled, not by shooting threes.
UMass free throw %53.3%Ranks 337th after a 67.2% mark last season, a costly weakness in a two-possession game.
BC returning minutes0.0%None of last season's minutes are back, so last season's 11-20 record says almost nothing about this team.
