Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks vs High Point Panthers prediction: UMES ball security faces High Point's pressure in Panthers' home opener
A rebuilt Maryland Eastern Shore roster that leaned on Bobby Gardner's 30-point debut now has to protect the ball against a High Point program that made opponents pay for every mistake last season.
| Spread | High Point -30.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 149 |
- High Point should control a home opener; the margin depends on how often a brand-new UMES backcourt gives the ball away.
- Bobby Gardner used 37.2% of UMES possessions in his debut and now faces High Point's rebuilt defense.
- High Point is a 30.5-point favorite with the total at 149, both unchanged; UMES covered +32.5 at Wake Forest on Monday.
Turnovers decide the margin
High Point spent last March knocking Wisconsin out of the NCAA Tournament, 83-82, then rebuilt most of its rotation. Wednesday night at the Qubein Center is the home crowd's first look at the reloaded Panthers, and the visitor is a Maryland Eastern Shore roster that is almost entirely new. With High Point favored by 30.5, the real question is how many possessions the Hawks can keep.
Ball security was UMES's worst trait last season. The Hawks turned it over on 24.0% of possessions (turnovers per 100 possessions), which ranked dead last of 365. Only 6.9% of last season's minutes are back, so this group isn't bound by that history. The opener didn't break the pattern, though: UMES gave it away on 25.7% of possessions at Wake Forest.
High Point won 31 games last season with the opposite skill. The Panthers forced turnovers on 22.3% of opponent possessions, seventh nationally, and ranked second in steal rate. That pressure has new faces now, and it was quieter against Liberty. If it returns in full on Wednesday, the Panthers will get easy baskets and a lopsided score.
Bobby Gardner carries everything
UMES has one proven scorer, and he has played one college game for the Hawks. Gardner scored 30 points at Wake Forest, hitting 4 of 9 threes. He used 37.2% of the team's possessions while on the floor, so almost every good UMES trip ran through him.
The help was thin. Isaiah Griffin added 10 off the bench, and Levi Beckwith, the only returning player, went scoreless. Sacred Heart transfer Lucius Gibson-Savadel gave the Hawks a presence inside with 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. UMES rebounded 36.8% of its own misses in the opener, a real path to extra shots, but High Point cleaned the defensive glass well against Liberty.
The bigger worry is the other end. Wake Forest shot 67.6% on twos against UMES, a mark that ranks 323rd. That is a direct invitation to High Point's interior scorers.
High Point reloads around Fletcher
High Point returns 31.7% of last season's minutes, and star guard Rob Martin is gone, but the Panthers restocked through the portal and were picked first in the Big South preseason poll. Cam'Ron Fletcher is the league's preseason Player of the Year after scoring 13.2 points per game last season. Rivera-Torres and CJ Brown made the preseason first team.
The opener against Liberty spread the scoring around. Tulane transfer Curtis Williams Jr. led with 12, freshman Trey Pearson added 11 on 5-of-7 shooting, and Conrad Martinez chipped in 10. The defense held Liberty to 19.2% from three, 38th nationally, and blocked shots at a 20.0% rate.
The Panthers also played slower. They averaged 66.5 possessions per 40 minutes against Liberty after ranking 32nd in pace last season. No injuries were listed for High Point as of Nov. 3.
A big number, tested once already
The spread and total have not moved since the line first appeared Wednesday morning. UMES already got through a similar number: it lost 83-62 at Wake Forest but covered as a 32.5-point underdog, and that game went over its total.
The comparison has limits. Wake Forest ranks 64th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). High Point finished last season 73rd, with UMES 347th. High Point's opener went under its total, and its slower first-game pace matters for a total of 149.
