Blue Mountain vs Tennessee Tech prediction: Tobin Anderson opens his Tennessee Tech chapter against NAIA Blue Mountain

A new coach and a new conference make this tune-up mostly a first look at what Anderson has built in Cookeville, and whether he has fixed the giveaways.

Quick take
  • Tennessee Tech should control a home date against a non-Division I visitor; the real interest is how Anderson's rebuilt program looks.
  • Watch Tennessee Tech's ball security: last season it turned the ball over on 19.2% of possessions, 328th of 365.
  • No spread or total has been posted. Last season's 19.2% turnover rate is the number that bears most on any margin.

Anderson's first impression

Tennessee Tech has a new coach, a new league and no recent run of wins to protect. Tobin Anderson was hired in March 2026, after John Pelphrey was fired March 3 following seven losing seasons. Anderson arrives as the coach who led 16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson past 1-seed Purdue in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

The Golden Eagles' move to the Southern Conference took effect July 1, 2026, so this upcoming Nov. 4 home game at the Hooper Eblen Center is a low-stakes look at a program in transition. No reliable 2026-27 roster, transfer list or projected starting lineup has surfaced, which leaves the personnel picture unsettled for now.

What last season left behind

Last season's numbers describe Pelphrey's team, and with a coaching change and an unknown share of returning players, they are a weak guide. Still, they show where the rebuild started. Tennessee Tech finished 13-18 last season.

The offense was the problem. Adjusted offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) sat at 102.4 in last season's final ratings, 288th nationally. The Golden Eagles shot 31.5% from three, 314th, and gave the ball away too often.

There were usable pieces. Tennessee Tech shot 75.9% at the free-throw line, 50th in the country, and kept opponents off the line well, with an opponent free throw rate that ranked 69th. It also played at a brisk 69.2 possessions per 40 minutes, 98th, a pace that can stretch a margin against an overmatched opponent if Anderson keeps it.

Who Blue Mountain is

Blue Mountain is not a Division I team, and little is known about this season's roster or coaching staff. ESPN labels the school Blue Mountain Christian, while a game report from last season calls it NAIA-member Blue Mountain College.

The clearest reference point is a Division I trip last season: Tennessee State beat Blue Mountain 86-71. That is the shape of game to expect here, with the questions centered on the home side's execution rather than the result.

Numbers that matter

Turnover rate, last season19.2%Ranked 328th of 365, the weakest habit Anderson inherits.
3-point %, last season31.5%Ranked 314th, a key reason the offense finished 288th in adjusted efficiency.
Free throw %, last season75.9%Ranked 50th, a strength if the roster that shot it is back.
Pace, last season69.2Possessions per 40 minutes, 98th nationally, which favors a wide margin against a smaller opponent.
