Jackson State vs Southern Miss prediction: Southern Miss rebuilds on the fly as Ruffin and Jackson State visit

With the Golden Eagles returning only a sliver of last season's minutes, a Jackson State team built around one high-usage guard gets an early read on Southern Miss's new rotation.

Quick take
  • Expect a scrappy, foul-heavy game in which Southern Miss's new transfers try to overpower a Jackson State team that struggled on the glass last season.
  • Daeshun Ruffin, who carried a 35.9% usage rate last season, against whichever new Southern Miss guards draw him.
  • No line has posted yet; the gap in last season's adjusted net efficiency ranks, 221st vs. 351st, frames the expected favorite.

A roster built from scratch

Southern Miss will open its home floor to Jackson State with almost nobody who carried last season's team. Players on this roster logged just 15.1% of the Golden Eagles' 2025-26 minutes, and the latest look at the new group was a 82-72 exhibition loss to LSU New Orleans on Oct. 21, with Southern Miss scoring 72.

The departures are heavy. Tylik Weeks, who scored 19.7 points a game, is now at Memphis, and frontcourt anchor Djahi Binet is gone too. That makes last season's 19-16 record and team numbers a weak guide for this game.

What's left is a mix of one returner and a wave of transfers. Isaac Taveras is the holdover with a real role, averaging 15.3 points last season. Cameron Wallace arrives from Little Rock, where he averaged 12.7 points and 6.9 rebounds, and point guard Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt comes over from Hampton. How quickly those pieces fit is the central question of the night.

Ruffin and a new coach

Jackson State is reset in a different way. Mo Williams left for Kentucky, and Trey Johnson was introduced as head coach on May 4. But the Tigers kept far more of their roster, returning 55.0% of last season's minutes.

The headliner is Daeshun Ruffin, who averaged 22.0 points and 5.1 assists last season. He was the offense, and the efficiency showed the strain: an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 46. Dorian McMillian adds volume from deep after hitting 56 threes.

That backcourt fed a shot profile that leaned on the arc without paying off. Jackson State took threes on 43.3% of its shots last season (104th of 365) but made just 31.4% of them (318th). Southern Miss went the other way, ranking 353rd in 3-point attempt rate. Last season's team ratings put Jackson State 351st in adjusted net efficiency, points per 100 possessions adjusted for opponents, so Johnson's staff has room to change the approach.

Possessions and the glass

The clearest edge for Southern Miss, if its new frontcourt holds up, is the backboard. Jackson State grabbed only 62.8% of opponents' misses last season, 363rd of 365. The Golden Eagles also carry the bigger lineup, with a minutes-weighted average height of 77.6 inches.

Ball security was another Jackson State problem. The Tigers turned it over on 19.6% of possessions, 336th nationally. Southern Miss forced turnovers at a top-110 rate last season, though the players who did it are mostly gone, so treat that edge as a hope more than a given.

Whistles and tempo

Both teams sent opponents to the line constantly last season. Jackson State ranked 331st in opponent free throw rate (free throws attempted per field goal attempt), and Southern Miss was 342nd. A game with plenty of stoppages favors the better shooters at the stripe, and Jackson State made 75.8% of its free throws (54th). Ruffin hit 84% of his.

The Golden Eagles' new arrivals cut the other way. Wallace made 57.4% of his free throws at Little Rock, and Taveras made 58.8% last season.

The tempo gap is real but modest. Jackson State played at 70.6 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 53rd fastest, while Southern Miss sat at 67.2.

What to watch

  • Ruffin's workload. If he dominates the ball again, Southern Miss's new guards get an early test of their defensive cohesion.
  • Second chances. Jackson State's rebounding was among the worst nationally last season; Wallace and Overstreet should feast if that holds.
  • Free throws late. Two foul-prone teams and a sharp gap in shooting at the line could swing a close finish.
  • History. Southern Miss won last season's meeting 81-71 in Jackson, but almost none of those Golden Eagles remain.
