Indiana St Sycamores vs Ball State Cardinals prediction: Ball State keeps firing threes at Indiana State's wide-open perimeter
Two 0-1 teams with rebuilt rosters meet in Muncie tonight, and the Cardinals' frigid shooting opener runs straight into a Sycamores defense that couldn't guard the arc.
| Spread | Ball State -2 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 147.5 |
- Expect Ball State to keep hoisting threes while Indiana State runs nearly everything through Karmani Gregory; Cardinal turnovers could tilt a tight game.
- Ball State's shooters against an Indiana State defense that let Charlotte make 48.0% from three in the opener.
- Ball State is -3 after first showing at -3.75, and the total climbed to 147.5; both teams went under in their openers.
A cold barrage meets an open door
Ball State's first game under a new coach was a shooting nightmare. The Cardinals lost 67-55 at Georgia Southern, and they got there by firing away: 62.7% of their shots came from three, sixth-most of 360 Division I teams. They made just 13.5% of them, which ranks 355th.
That combination is unlikely to repeat exactly. K'Jei Parker went 1 of 10 from deep, and last season at UMass he made 40.8% of his threes. Shooters with that track record don't usually stay buried.
Indiana State's opener offers the Cardinals a friendly place to rebound. Charlotte made 48.0% of its threes against the Sycamores, 353rd in the country, and took nearly half its shots from deep. If Ball State's volume stays this high and the makes return toward normal, the Cardinals' offense looks very different from Monday's.
Gregory carries the Sycamores
Indiana State returns none of last season's minutes. Coach Matthew Graves, in his third season, rebuilt with nine transfers, five freshmen and international big man Alessio Calamita.
The early answer to who runs it is Karmani Gregory. The South Carolina Upstate transfer scored 29 points with 8 assists in the 78-70 home loss to Charlotte. He used 41.5% of the team's possessions while on the floor, an enormous share. Maguire Mitchell, over from IU Indianapolis, added 15 points and was the most efficient scorer on the roster.
The drop-off after those two was steep. Calamita went 1 of 6 from the field in his debut. Gregory used 41.5% of the team's possessions, so Ball State will have to decide how much attention to give him.
The possession battle
This is where Indiana State can make up ground. The Sycamores turned it over on just 10.6% of their possessions against Charlotte, 20th nationally. Their defense forced turnovers at a 24.2% clip, which ranks 77th.
Ball State was sloppy at Georgia Southern, giving it away on 22.1% of possessions, 291st in the country. A team that can't buy a three can't afford to lose extra trips.
The Cardinals' counter is the glass. They grabbed 34.9% of their own misses, and forward Mason Jones pulled down 13 rebounds in the opener. Indiana State ranked 326th in defensive rebounding against Charlotte. Every Ball State miss is a real chance at a second shot.
New coach, old rivalry
Chris Capko, previously SMU's associate head coach, is in his first season at Ball State after replacing Michael Lewis. His roster returns only 16.6% of last season's minutes, built around eight transfers including Parker, Sean Blake from Vermont and Javion Guy-King from Central Arkansas.
Indiana State has won the last three meetings in this in-state series, most recently 70-52 in Terre Haute last November. With both rosters turned over, that history says little about tonight. The same goes for last season's ratings, which had the Sycamores 183rd and the Cardinals 294th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents).
This is Indiana State's first road game, and both teams come in with four days of rest. Ball State had no injuries listed as of Thursday. Indiana State's status hasn't been confirmed, though Gregory, Mitchell, Jackson Cooper and EJ McQuillan all started the opener.
