Holy Cross vs Rhode Island prediction: Rhode Island's turnover-hunting defense opens its season against Holy Cross

The Rams forced turnovers at an elite rate last season, and Holy Cross arrives at the Ryan Center with little proven inside to answer it.

Quick take
  • Expect a slow, grinding opener where Rhode Island's defense, not its shaky shooting, builds the margin through steals and rim protection.
  • Rhode Island's pressure against Holy Cross's ball handlers: last season the Rams' forced turnover rate ranked 14th nationally.
  • No spread or total is posted yet. Both teams played slowly last season, Rhode Island at 66 possessions per 40 minutes.

Where the Rams make their living

Rhode Island's identity under Archie Miller last season was defense, and it showed up most in turnovers. The Rams forced turnovers on 21.1% of opponent possessions, 14th of 365 Division I teams, with a steal rate that ranked 23rd. That pressure carried a defense that allowed 102.7 points per 100 possessions, 57th nationally.

Holy Cross will at least bring some resistance. The Crusaders turned it over on 15.4% of possessions last season, a respectable 85th. The question is whether that care holds against a defense this disruptive in the season's first game, with new pieces on both rosters.

The other end is where Rhode Island struggled. The Rams made just 31.1% of their threes last season, 323rd nationally, yet still let them fly on a large share of their shots. Their offense ranked 301st in raw efficiency. Points off turnovers are how this team papers over that.

Holy Cross's soft middle

The Crusaders' biggest hole last season was protecting the paint. Opponents made 56.5% of their two-pointers against Holy Cross, 346th of 365, and its block rate of 5.1% ranked 358th. Rhode Island made 52.8% of its twos, a middling 164th, but it should not need to settle for jumpers against that kind of interior.

The Rams' own rim protection runs the other way: their 12.0% block rate ranked 51st. Holy Cross made only 50.5% of its twos last season, so a mismatch inside could decide this game early.

Holy Cross does have one counterpunch. It cleaned its defensive glass well last season, grabbing 73.1% of available misses (45th), which limits the Rams' second chances. On the other end the Crusaders barely crash at all, with an offensive rebound rate of 23.0% that ranked 357th.

A tilt at the free-throw line

Free throws offer Holy Cross its clearest path to keeping this close. Rhode Island fouled often last season, posting an opponent free throw rate of 42.6%, 340th nationally. Holy Cross made 75.6% of its free throws, 59th, so trips to the line are worth more to the Crusaders than most.

The catch is that Holy Cross rarely earned them, ranking 260th in free throw rate. If it can attack an aggressive, reaching Rams defense and draw contact, that changes. Holy Cross's own defense was disciplined, allowing an opponent free throw rate of 26.8%, 24th, which takes away a Rhode Island offense that ranked 83rd at getting to the line.

New faces and a contract year

All of the numbers above describe last season's teams, and Rhode Island has reshaped its roster. The Rams brought in Towson guard Dylan Williamson, UT Martin forward Matas Deniusas and UC Santa Barbara wing Jason Fontenet II, alongside six returning scholarship players and four true freshmen. Fontenet arrives after an injury; the school said in May that he was fully recovered.

Miller is in his fifth season and entering the final year of his contract, which raises the stakes on a team that finished 16-16. Rhode Island closed last season 136th in adjusted net efficiency.

Holy Cross went 11-22 last season and finished 329th in that same measure under Dave Paulsen. The Crusaders drew 28 points in the 10-team Patriot League preseason poll, which American topped with 81. The last meeting, at the Ryan Center in November 2024, went to Rhode Island 91-77.
