Holy Cross Crusaders vs Villanova Wildcats prediction: Villanova's turnover problem draws a forgiving test from Holy Cross

The Wildcats gave the ball away 20 times in Rome, and their home-opener opponent forces turnovers less often than almost anyone in Division I.

Quick take
  • Villanova should control its home opener against a Holy Cross team that lost by 44 at Rhode Island. The open question is margin.
  • The test is Villanova's ball security against a Holy Cross defense whose 6.8% forced turnover rate ranks 358th of 360.
  • Villanova is a 34.5-point favorite with a 151.5 total. The spread has moved from 31.5 to 34.5 while the total is unchanged since first posted. Holy Cross allowed 103 points in its opener.

Twenty turnovers and a cure

Villanova's rebuilt roster debuted in Rome and lost 74-72 to Notre Dame. The reasons were plain: 20 turnovers, 15 of them before halftime, and 17 offensive rebounds handed back to the Irish. That pushed the Wildcats' turnover rate (giveaways per 100 possessions) to 28.6%, 351st of 360 teams.

Friday night at Finneran Pavilion offers close to an ideal remedy. Holy Cross forced turnovers on just 6.8% of Rhode Island's possessions in its opener, 358th nationally. A team that doesn't pressure the ball gives Villanova's new guards a full game to settle into their reads without paying for every loose pass.

The glass follows the same logic. Holy Cross rebounded only 18.4% of its own misses at Rhode Island, 348th in the country, and that wasn't a one-night fluke: last season's Crusaders ranked 357th in offensive rebounding. Villanova's opening-night weakness on the defensive boards should get far less of a test here.
