Georgia Southern Eagles vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets prediction: Georgia Southern's free-throw habit tests Scott Cross's rebuilt Georgia Tech
An 18-point spread asks whether a remade Tech roster can keep the Eagles off the line and its own hands on the ball.
| Spread | Georgia Tech -17.25 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 159.5 |
- Expect Georgia Tech to push tempo and own the offensive glass while Georgia Southern tries to turn the game into a free-throw contest.
- Eltramon Smith Jr., the Eagles' high-usage scorer, against a Tech frontcourt led by Tylis Jordan, who blocked five shots Tuesday.
- Tech moved from -16 to -18 and the total rose to 157. Both teams' openers finished under their closing totals.
The Eagles live at the line
Both programs tore their rosters down to the studs this offseason, and both won their openers comfortably. Friday night in Atlanta, the market says only one of them is close to finished. Georgia Southern's best argument against that view starts at the free-throw line.
The Eagles posted a free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) of 67.9% against Ball State, seventh in Division I. Their shooting from the floor was far less convincing, so getting to the line is the offense.
Georgia Tech gave them reason to keep attacking. Even in a game where it smothered Hampton, Tech's defense allowed a free throw rate that ranks 310th. Foul trouble for Tech's bigs is the cleanest way for the Eagles to keep this within reach.
Converting is the problem. Georgia Southern made 61.1% of its free throws, 275th. Eltramon Smith Jr. is the exception, a reliable shooter at the stripe on the way to 24 points in the opener.
Tech's boards against its giveaways
Tech's sloppiest number from the Hampton win was its turnover rate: 23.1 per 100 possessions, 310th. Georgia Southern's defense forced turnovers at a rate that ranks 111th, so ball security is a live question for a backcourt still learning each other.
Tech covered for it on the glass. The Yellow Jackets rebounded 45.2% of their own misses, while Georgia Southern's defensive rebounding ranked 275th. Tech also plays slightly bigger by minutes-weighted height, and Tylis Jordan gives it a rim protector. The Eagles' answer is Dallas Gardner, a Sun Belt preseason second-team pick who posted a double-double off the bench against Ball State.
Strangers in both locker rooms
Georgia Tech kept 14.2% of last season's minutes. Georgia Southern kept 13.2%. Last season's numbers for either program are a weak guide.
Scott Cross came from Troy after back-to-back NCAA Tournament trips and returned only Kam Craft and Cole Kirouac. The media picked Tech 18th in the ACC. The headliner is Colby Garland, who averaged 20.3 points at San José State last season and opened with 16. Nasir Whitlock shot 43.3% from three at Lehigh last season but went 0-for-6 from deep Tuesday. If he finds his stroke, Tech's ceiling rises.
Georgia Southern leans on Smith, a seldom-used reserve at Stephen F. Austin last season who carried a 33.6% usage rate in the opener. Little Rock transfer Truman Claytor IV went 1-of-8, so the Eagles need a second scorer to emerge.
A pace gap and a climbing number
Tech played at 77.5 possessions per 40 minutes in its opener. Georgia Southern played at 68.5, a bit slower than last season's Eagles, who ran 70.9. Whoever sets the tempo shapes a total that has climbed from 153.25 to 157 since our feed first saw it, even though both openers went under.
The spread moved the same direction, from Tech -16 to -18. Both teams covered last week, and Georgia Southern did it as a home underdog in a 67-55 win. History favors Tech, which has never lost to the Eagles, but last November's meeting in Atlanta finished 68-66.
