Quick take
  • Duquesne starts with continuity and home floor; Purdue Fort Wayne needs steals and live-ball runs to offset a thin rebounding profile.
  • Tarence Guinyard against a Mastodons defense that forced turnovers at a top-50 rate last season.
  • No line is posted yet. Last season's adjusted net ratings had Duquesne 127th and Purdue Fort Wayne 258th.

The turnover battle decides it

Duquesne opens its season on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse against a Horizon League team built to take the ball away. The Dukes' flaw last season was ball security. Their turnover rate, the share of possessions that end in a giveaway, was 17.8%, which ranked 261st of 365.

Purdue Fort Wayne lived on the other side of that ledger. The Mastodons forced turnovers on 19.9% of opponent possessions, 45th nationally, and posted a steal rate that ranked 30th. They also protected the ball themselves, turning it over just 14.3% of the time.

If those habits carry over, Purdue Fort Wayne gets extra shots it badly needs. Steals turn into runouts, and runouts are the cleanest path to an upset on the road.

Duquesne should own the glass

The Mastodons pay for their style on the boards. Their offensive rebound rate, the share of their own misses they recover, ranked 353rd last season. Their defensive rebounding was barely better, at 67.2% (303rd).

Duquesne grabbed 31.1% of its own misses last season, a middling 184th. Against this opponent, middling should be enough to produce second chances. That is the Dukes' best counter to the turnover problem: every possession lost to a steal can be won back on the offensive glass.

A defense that couldn't stop shots

Purdue Fort Wayne's offense was efficient last season, with an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 54.4%, 66th nationally. The defense gave all of it back. Opponents posted a 54.6% effective mark against the Mastodons, 334th, and hit 36.5% from three, 344th.

Duquesne has a shooter positioned to exploit that. Alex Williams made 39.6% of his threes last season in a reserve role. The Mastodons didn't send opponents to the line often, with an opponent free throw rate that ranked 29th. Expect this to be decided by jump shots and the possession math, not foul trouble.

Who's back for the Dukes

Dru Joyce III enters his third year with real continuity. Players who logged 72.2% of last season's minutes are on this roster, so last season's Duquesne numbers are a sturdier guide than usual.

The centerpiece is Tarence Guinyard, who started every game and averaged 16.6 points with an offensive rating of 119.3. David Dixon gives the Dukes rim protection after blocking 1.6 shots a game. The big loss is Jimmie Williams, who scored 15.0 a game and is now at Ohio State. Creighton transfer Kerem Konan and freshmen Jackson Williams and Arness Lawson are among the newcomers, though their roles haven't been set.

No injuries or eligibility issues had surfaced for either team as of Oct. 15.

Setting and stakes

This tips off a run of five straight home games, the first time Duquesne has opened a season that way in over 50 years. Jon Coffman, in his 13th season at Purdue Fort Wayne, brings a program that finished 17-15 last season. Duquesne went 18-15, and one preseason A-10 ballot slots the Dukes 9th of 14.

The tip time hasn't been announced, and no betting line has been posted.

What to watch - Duquesne's turnovers in the first 10 minutes against Purdue Fort Wayne's pressure - Offensive rebounds as the Dukes' equalizer - Guinyard's shot volume with Jimmie Williams gone
