Eastern Michigan Eagles vs Xavier Musketeers prediction: Mohammad Habhab carries Eastern Michigan into Xavier's 23-point gauntlet

One Eagles forward produced nearly half his team's scoring in the opener; tonight he faces a remade Xavier team that smothered its first opponent and wants to run.

Quick take
  • Xavier should push the pace and lean on its depth while Eastern Michigan slows the game and feeds Habhab. The margin depends on how long he holds up.
  • Habhab, who used 40.8% of his team's possessions in the opener, now faces a Xavier defense that allowed a 31.5% effective field goal percentage.
  • Xavier moved from -20 to -23 since our feed first saw the game; both teams covered in their openers and both games went under.

One man against a wall

Eastern Michigan's offense right now is Mohammad Habhab. In the 71-70 win at Coastal Carolina on Nov. 2, the forward scored 34 points with 13 rebounds and used 40.8% of the Eagles' possessions while on the floor. That is a massive share for one player, and it came off the bench. He is the program's active career leader in points (459) and rebounds (262). He stayed after entering the transfer portal during the coaching change, following talks with first-year coach Billy Donlon.

The problem is scale. Last season Habhab averaged 14.2 points and shot 22.2% from three, so 34 points marks a new ceiling, not a baseline. Xavier's opener showed what its defense can do to a short-handed offense: Mount St. Mary's scored 16 first-half points and posted a 31.5% effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure that counts threes as 1.5 makes), 15th nationally. That came against a team ranked 284th in adjusted net efficiency, so the number needs a discount. Even so, Xavier has bodies to throw at Habhab. Pitino has called Mike Nwoko a true center, and he has said Jovan Milicevic can play the four.

Two speeds, one total

Xavier played its opener at 80 possessions per 40 minutes, 35th nationally, and scored 51 points before halftime. Eastern Michigan crawled along at 66.5, 306th. Under Donlon the Eagles barely shoot threes: their 3-point attempt rate ranks 348th. They also trailed Coastal Carolina 37-34 at the break before grinding out the win.

The total of 156.5 asks Xavier to impose its tempo. A blowout pace helps the over, but Eastern Michigan's best path to staying close is to shorten the game and make Xavier work in the half court.

Who owns the possessions

Eastern Michigan's most useful trait is ball security. It turned the ball over on 10.6% of possessions at Coastal Carolina, 20th nationally. Xavier's defense forced turnovers at Mount St. Mary's, posting a 17.5% steal rate (34th). Chance Westry had five steals in 19 minutes off the bench. If the Eagles keep that turnover number anywhere near their opener, the margin stays reasonable.

Xavier's own sloppiness is the opening for the visitors. The Musketeers coughed it up on 21.2% of possessions, 275th, and made only 61.5% of their free throws. Eastern Michigan lived at the line in its opener, with a free throw rate (free throws attempted per field goal attempt) of 54.7%, 43rd nationally. That is how a slow underdog chips away at a big number late.

A new cast at Xavier

Pitino's second Xavier team kept just 13.1% of last season's minutes, so last season's 15-18 record says little about this group. The transfers carry it. Westry scored 17 in 19 minutes in the opener. Ruben Dominguez made 40% of his threes at Texas A&M last season, though he went 2 of 8 against Mount St. Mary's. Milicevic, the one real returner, hit three of five from deep. Xavier also won an exhibition at Tennessee 86-70 in October.

Availability is murky. A. Elson (foot) has been listed as questionable on a status dated Oct. 19, and Xavier hasn't given an update. An undated report had Gabriel Pozzato (knee) still weeks from full clearance. No Eastern Michigan injury news turned up. Its new transfers are still finding their footing: Jabri Fitzpatrick, who averaged 15.0 points at New Haven last season, went 0 of 4 in the opener.

Where the number went

The line has moved toward Xavier. The spread grew from -20 to -23, and the total rose from 154.75 to 156.5. Both teams covered in their openers. Eastern Michigan won outright as a 1.5-point underdog, and both games stayed under. MAC coaches picked the Eagles ninth in the league, and they lost their exhibition at Michigan 87-62. The question for the spread is simple: can Habhab be close to his opener for 40 minutes against a deeper, longer team?
