Eastern Illinois Panthers vs Iowa Hawkeyes prediction: Iowa's pressure awaits an Eastern Illinois team that coughed it up
Eastern Illinois gave the ball away on nearly a third of its possessions at Indiana, and Iowa's defense forces turnovers well enough to decide the 35.5-point spread.
| Spread | Iowa -34.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 135 |
- Iowa should control this from the start; the question is whether its defense turns Eastern Illinois turnovers into a margin big enough for the spread.
- Eastern Illinois's ball handlers, led by Demar Burton, against an Iowa defense that forced turnovers at a 25.0% rate in its opener.
- Iowa is -35.5, unchanged since our feed first saw it. Eastern Illinois covered 34.5 at Indiana despite a 91-57 loss.
Turnovers decide the margin
Nobody expects Eastern Illinois to win in Iowa City tonight. The real question is how many empty trips the Panthers give Iowa, and the opener says it could be a lot. At Indiana, Eastern Illinois turned it over on 31.9% of its possessions, which ranks 358th of 360 Division I teams. The 23-44 first half showed what that looks like.
Iowa is built to punish it. The Hawkeyes forced turnovers at a 25.0% rate against Lipscomb (66th nationally), and their steal rate ranks 50th. That fits Ben McCollum's first season, when Iowa ranked 19th in forced turnover rate. At the other end Iowa protected the ball, turning it over on just 11.6% of its trips (34th). If those trends hold, Iowa simply gets far more shots than Eastern Illinois does.
A rebuild and a reload
Eastern Illinois says it is playing a nearly new roster, and the numbers agree. Players back from last season's 13-20 team account for only 10.1% of last season's minutes. That makes last season's Panthers, who had a top-100 defense, a poor guide to this group. Junior college arrivals Tanner Vogel, Daniel Ntambwe and Andrew Austin all played real minutes at Indiana.
Iowa's reload is smaller but still real. The Hawkeyes return 56.4% of last season's minutes and have to replace their top three scorers, including Bennett Stirtz, now an Oklahoma City Thunder rookie. Cooper Koch is the top returning scorer, and Jaidyn Coon led a 10-man scoring effort against Lipscomb before moving into the starting lineup in the second half.
The swing piece is Andrew McKeever, the 7-3 center who missed the opener with what Iowa called an injury. As of Thursday he was expected to play if his recovery had no setbacks, and on Friday McCollum said he hopes McKeever plays. Iowa hasn't confirmed it. He averaged 9.1 rebounds at Saint Mary's last season.
Iowa lives inside
Iowa's offense ran through the paint in the opener. It made 64.7% of its twos (54th) and shot just 24.0% from three. Eastern Illinois allowed Indiana 58.8% inside the arc, which ranks 292nd, and Iowa's lineup is taller on average. With or without McKeever, expect the Hawkeyes to attack the rim.
That also sends them to the line. Eastern Illinois's opponent free throw rate ranks 328th, so the fouls should keep coming. The catch for a big spread is that Iowa made only 50.0% of its free throws against Lipscomb, 343rd nationally. Missed free throws are a quiet way for a blowout to fall short of 35.5.
Reading a 35.5-point number
The market hasn't moved the spread off Iowa -35.5 since our feed first saw it. The total has ticked up from 136.5 to 137.5. Both teams' openers point in different directions. Eastern Illinois lost 91-57 at Indiana and still covered the 34.5, and that game went over. Iowa beat Lipscomb 76-54, short of a 23.25-point number, and that game stayed under.
Pace is the variable to watch for the total. Last season Iowa played the slowest pace in Division I, 365th of 365. It played faster against Lipscomb, but 68.5 possessions still ranked only 261st. A deliberate Iowa offense limits possessions, which makes covering a number this large hard even when the Hawkeyes dominate.
