East Tennessee St Buccaneers vs NC State Wolfpack prediction: ETSU's slow-down blueprint tests NC State's 16.5-point cushion

Quick take
  • NC State should own the glass and the free-throw line while ETSU tries to drag this into the slow grind that worked at Arizona State.
  • BJ Ward, who used 43.9% of ETSU's possessions in the opener, faces an NC State defense that held Campbell to 19 first-half points.
  • NC State is favored by 16.5, up from 15 when the line first appeared; ETSU covered as a 19.25-point underdog Monday.

ETSU wants a crawl

East Tennessee State left Arizona State on Monday with a 75-65 loss and a cover as a 19.25-point underdog. The Buccaneers got there by grinding: they played at 61.5 possessions per 40 minutes, 352nd of 360 teams, and the game stayed under its 145.5 total.

That is the plan in Raleigh tonight. Shorten the game, keep NC State's new pieces from settling in, and make 16.5 points feel like a long way. NC State's opener against Campbell wasn't a track meet either, at 68 possessions, and its 83-64 win also landed under a total of 158.5.

The market has leaned the other way. The spread has moved toward NC State from -15, and the total sits at 152.5.

Two rosters built from scratch

Last season's final numbers show a wide gap: NC State finished 34th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions scored minus allowed, adjusted for opponents), ETSU 145th. Neither figure travels well. NC State's current roster played 28.1% of last season's minutes, and ETSU's played 24.4%.

Justin Gainey, a former Wolfpack guard who spent five seasons on Rick Barnes' staff at Tennessee, is in his first year after Will Wade left for LSU. ETSU, picked 2nd in the SoCon coaches' poll, is without Jordan McCullum, its leading returning scorer and only returning starter. He tore his ACL in practice in September and is expected to miss the season.

That puts the offense in BJ Ward's hands. The Southeast Missouri State transfer and SoCon preseason all-conference pick scored 25 at Arizona State, with nearly half of ETSU's possessions ending with him. Efficiency is the worry: his effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) was 46.5% last season at SEMO. Trevor Hennig, the Weber State transfer, gave ETSU a more efficient second option off the bench.

Lubin and new roles

Ven-Allen Lubin, one of NC State's two key returners, is playing full-time forward for the first time in college. His debut produced 20 points and 10 rebounds without a missed field goal, and last season he posted a 67.4% effective field goal percentage.

Around him, nearly everyone is learning something new. Preston Edmead, from Hofstra, is adjusting to full-time point guard. Christian Hammond and Eemeli Yalaho, full-time starters last season, are coming off the bench, and Hammond answered with 14 points against Campbell. Robert Jurkovic is playing a center role he hasn't played before. No starting lineup had been confirmed for tonight. Paul McNeil Jr., who shot 42.7% from three last season, gives the Wolfpack a proven floor spacer when the rotation sputters.

NC State also has the size edge, averaging 78.1 inches in minutes-weighted height to ETSU's 76.3.

Where the extra possessions go

ETSU's opener exposed two problems that line up with NC State's strengths. The Bucs turned it over on 21.3% of possessions, 277th nationally, and secured just 57.6% of Arizona State's misses on the defensive glass, 331st.

They also fouled freely. Arizona State drew free throws at a 49.1% rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt), 308th, while ETSU barely got to the line itself. NC State went the opposite way against Campbell, allowing an opponent free throw rate that ranks 9th.

NC State didn't force many turnovers in its opener, so its cushion likely comes from second chances and the whistle. If ETSU cleans up the glass, the slow pace makes a big margin harder to build.
