Detroit Mercy Titans vs Marquette Golden Eagles prediction: Fru and Marquette's new frontcourt face a rebuilt Detroit Mercy
Marquette's opener showed a team that owned the paint and missed from outside, and Detroit Mercy returns too little to make it shoot.
| Spread | Marquette -32.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 155 |
- Marquette likely controls the paint and the glass early, and the 32.5-point number then depends on bench minutes and free throws.
- Sananda Fru and Joshua Clark against a Titans frontline that lost Ryan Kalambay, last season's shot-blocker, to St. Bonaventure.
- Marquette moved from -30.5 to -32.5; its opener stayed under a 146.5 total at a pace ranked 335th of 360.
A frontcourt that took over
Marquette's opener against Mercyhurst was a 78-43 rout built almost entirely inside. The Golden Eagles grabbed 60.6% of their own misses, second in Division I after one weekend. That is offensive rebound rate, the share of missed shots a team gets back. They also blocked 29.0% of Mercyhurst's two-point tries, fourth in the country.
The newcomers did the damage. Sananda Fru, the Louisville transfer, put up 12 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks in just 23 minutes. Joshua Clark came off the bench for 18 points on 88.9% shooting. Smart praised his starters for setting a defensive tone to open both halves, and Mercyhurst scored 14 points before halftime.
Detroit Mercy finished last season 313th in two-point percentage at 48.8%, and Kalambay, who averaged 1.4 blocks, is gone. Kalambay averaged 1.4 blocks last season before leaving for St. Bonaventure.
Detroit Mercy starts over
The Titans went 17-15 last season and lost the core of that team. Players on this roster account for 38.7% of last season's minutes, so last season's numbers say little about this group. Orlando Lovejoy, who averaged 15.9 points a game last season, went to Green Bay. TJ Nadeau, who hit 46.7% of his threes, went to Tulane.
Tyler Spratt is the returner to watch. He shot 38.5% from three last season, but he went 3-for-8 in the Nov. 2 exhibition loss to Wayne State, 82-75. Two players did not play in that exhibition: Favor and Vladyslav Semerych, a 6-foot-9 forward. The team hasn't said whether either plays Friday. Horizon coaches picked the Titans seventh, and they are already barred from the 2026-27 postseason after missing the NCAA's academic progress benchmark.
Where Marquette can stall
The opener had flaws. Marquette made 19.0% of its threes, 339th nationally, and 61.5% of its free throws. Nigel James Jr., a unanimous preseason All-Big East first-team pick, played 21 minutes and scored eight points. Last season he averaged 16.4.
Detroit Mercy's strengths last season were on the perimeter: it held opponents to 32.7% from three and made 77.5% of its free throws, 22nd nationally. If Marquette's shooting stays cold and Smart spreads minutes again, the margin can flatten late. The rotation is also missing forward Caedin Hamilton, who tore his calf in early October; the most optimistic timeline as of Oct. 22 had him returning Nov. 22.
The market and the pace
Books opened with Marquette at -30.5 in our feed, and the line has moved to -32.5. The total sits at 155, almost unchanged from 154.25.
The total is the more interesting question. Marquette played the opener at 65 possessions, 335th of 360, and the game stayed well under its 146.5 total. Detroit Mercy ran at 69.5 possessions last season, 89th nationally, with a different roster. The Titans also fouled often last season, ranking 268th in opponent free throw rate, which hands Marquette free throws it has not been making. Marquette covered its only spread so far, laying 31.5 against Mercyhurst, a team ranked 281st in adjusted net efficiency.
The two programs last played on Nov. 14, 2006, an 87-45 Marquette win. Marquette leads the series 60-27, and Friday's game is a student-only event at the Al McGuire Center.
